MSRP: 1996 Lexus SC400 vs 2011 E350 4Matic
This is very interesting. Look at this after 15 years. I priced a 1996 Lexus SC400 almost 15 years ago. I had a 1992 Lexus SC400 that was coming off lease and was considering a buy on the next vehicle. I wound up leasing an ES300 because of an unsteady job situation.
The MSRP with options at that time was $59260.
Fast forward 15 years. The MSRP of a 2011 E350 4Matic/Sport/P1/Pano/Parktronic/Rear Spoiler came to $59135. WOW!!! What gives here. If you told me in 1995 I would be getting a Mercedes E Class for LESS than the SC400 at that given time I would think that MB had lost its edge. I went into MB show rooms then and thought that I did not belong there. Mind you I was 38 at that time and thought I was too young for a Mercedes.
BTW I ordered the car and was quoted a price of $54760 and my job situation is now no job for the last 2 years.
Any thoughts?

It's always interesting to compare prices of "old days VS now". But, of course, this isn't only "M-B" doing this, everything is relative, as always. That same Lexus now costs upward of $80K.
Didn't the original Mercedes Gullwing 300SL go for like under $10K?

I am not sure what that Lexus costs today. It is the SC430. But I will tell you this. After driving Lexus (2 cars) I always thought that I was "stepping up" by going to Mercedes.
Well really I am stepping down now. I went from an E430, to an E500, to the present E63. Now "down" to an E350. I did consider the E550 as it would be less drastic, but I live in the NYC area and the power mostly goes unused. Also I am not working, so I like to use the saved cash for other things.

Yeah, E63 was pointless for me as well on SoCal roads. I was considering a W211 E63.
W212 E350 and W211 E63 are comparable in current prices, and they obviously one-up each other in different ways.

That is an interesting comparison. I guess V6 vs V8 has a bit of the delta, along with the Coupe premium (look at BMW 650 vs 550, for example). SC400 in the 90's and early 2000's was a beautiful car that still looks good today...unlike its successor.
