E550 Airmatic Question

For those of you with an E550, I had a question. On my airmatic suspension, it seems that the car rises on sport mode and lowers on comfort mode, just thought it would be reverse, is this normal? Thank you for any input.

No, its immediatly apparent after you hit the button, while car is sitting, the car will rise in comfort mode and drop in sport. If it's reverse, your car is dislexic. You would also distinguish the ride characteristics between the 2 since it's pretty obvious.

+1

Pull the car up close to a wall or fence with a varied surface. Then switch modes and you should see the car changing positions. However I also agree you should feel the difference in ride if its working right.

well, I do feel the difference in ride quality. I put the car in park and went from sport to comfort and it seemed to rise in sport mode and go down in comfort mode, will have to try it again...

easiest way is to just measure the difference between the top of tire and fender at both settings.

It might have been you were parked on an uneven surface, or sometimes the Airmatic goes down at separate rates when you are stationary. I noticed the rear once lowered quicker than the front once which gave the appearance of the car 'rising' from the drivers seat. And because it is just a matter of inches, when the front eventually lowered I didn't really notice with the naked eye. Subsequent trials will surely demonstrate your car lowers in Sport though.

It is much more accurate to measure from the center of the wheel to the fender.

I have checked this again and as others have mentioned, either the back goes down first causing the front to rise a bit before lowering or the suspension at first rises a bit then ultimately does lower in the sport setting.

It's just as accurate and a lot easier to just measure the top lip of wheel to lip of fender. Also when you go in for an oil change, recall, etc. just have them run it through the tests. They do measurement on each corner to make sure that it falls within specs. I had 1 corner go bad on me and had it replaced.

On your E550? It went bad already?

It does lower in sport but I swear it goes up first and then lower...

Yea my right rear had a "microleak". I'm sure it was like that from the factory. It was a slow leak and I only noticed it when the car had sat several days without driving.

You should get outside your car with it in comfort and have someone put it in sport while your watching. I think the back is always 1st to adjust followed by the front.

Check you manual page 163, all it says it firms the ride. In the following paragraph, it talks about automatic leveling "The vehicle ride height is reduced at speed over 93 mph (by approximately 1") if the height is set to normal rather than raised, and the car is in sport mode".

RNBRAD,
So was your car just going up and down improperly or sitting uneven too. I have the Renntech V3 module (3months now) and never noticed a problem. Since getting bigger wheels, I notice minimal changes. My left rear side has been as much as 30mm lower when parked. However, upon driving it seems to be close to equal (with ignition on, car in park). The difference varies from nothing to 30mm. Have you noticed that big of a difference. Renntech told me to reset the module (install the bypass) and if there is still a problem to take it to Mercedes. I'm still in the process of figuring out where and when there's this large discrepancy. But something tells me the airmatic is the issue. It only has 6k miles on it.

My car would sit uneven. Cause the rt rear had a leak and over time it would drop further and further down till the top of the tire was eventually tucked behind the fender. It's not apparent till it sat for a few days and enough air leaked out to make it apparent. It was a very very small leak. It would drop about 1/3'' every 8 to 12hrs. Most people that drove their cars daily may never catcht the leak until it got bigger. My car sat for several days and the rt reat was almost on the ground. Since they fixed it all corners are dead even all the time. No discrepancy front to back or rt to left at all. Perfect balance!!

Was your car lowered when you took it in? If so, did the dealer give you any problems about fixing it under warranty.
