Alternative to rear-seat entertainment system

All right, I am not planning to buy this option from MB because it's totally passé (nobody buys DVDs anymore and their screen is probably a horrible 640x480) and likely in the thousands of dollars.

Instead I'd like to know if any of you has tried a way to mount their iPad behind the head rest instead? Not as a permanent solution but just for long trips to entertain the kid behind. Thanks.

Why would you need to mount it?

So that it does not need to be held by the child.

Gotcha, I was wondering if you wanted it tied into the stereo somehow. But if thats all you need then here is an easy fix. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-MOUNT-BRACKE...item4aa742bbbb

I dont know if anyone here has done anything more but I dont see why anyone would want to do an actual Ipad Install unless they plan to tie it into the system.

ever try car bingo? you have to draw objects, and the kiddies can cross them out...like bingo......
how about the license plate game?
or the counting nice cars game?

all these can help pass time, encourage using one's BRAIN, and isn't some electric babysitter......

I am just so sick of people ALWAYS being plugged into something...........that's going to come back and really bite us in the *** someday, LOL.........

okay, that's all I have

You can get it custom made...this is my rear TV for my daughter in the E55. It can be made where the Ipad could be removable.

Just a thought...

I like that, but do you ever hit your elbow on the back of it when resting it on the center console? I am 6'4" so I have my drivers seat pretty far back when my wife let's me drive her car and am afraid I would be hitting it all the time.

ive seen ipad mounts that velcro to back of headrests. I didn't get an entertainment center because usually the kids ride in the MDX which has a system....however for all future cars I am inclined just to go the ipad route too. As it is the 3 year old monopolizes my ipad!!

The BLACK MOUNT BRACKET BACK-CAR-SEAT HOLDER STAND FOR IPAD seems indeed to be what I am looking for. Thanks for the hint. I am not sure if this item is all plastic or not.

I don't want a central screen because my baby sits on the right on his car seat and yes, he too, monopolizes the iPad...

I have an Alpine 7" unit (WVGA 800x480) with 1.1 million pixels in my other vehicle (awesome picture) and the entertainment package in the 212 is every bit as nice. Not sure what you mean by nobody buys DVD's anymore? You talking about the switch to blu-ray?

The advent of HD, iPad-like devices has rendered previous systems obsolete and overpriced. The iPad is 1024x768. Movies can be purchased and downloaded on it without having to go to a store or having to wait for DVDs on the mail (those movies can be watched elsewhere too with Apple TV, so you buy them once). This is unbeatable. When MB offers HD screens in their entertainment offering, where you can download movies in an easy way (without manipulation of DVDs) such uploading directly from your computer to the car, then they will get close to the iPad. But they might still charge $1500 per screen for that when the iPad is $500...

So it looks the right attachment bracket is the only solution for me and for a very long time since those guys in the car industry evolve at a snail pace...

So aren't those movies your downloading to your Ipad in MPEG 4 format which are (640x480)? Can you intergrate the sound from the iPad into your HK system? Does the iPad offer high def 5.1 surround through it?

I've got two 8" screens, 2 remotes, 2 wireless headsets and a DVD player that are intergrated (matched and powered) into the car for 1800.00. I didn't think that was too bad. This is still the backseat of my automobile for my kids and not my home theater, cause even then, 1024x768 would not cut it for high definition, at least not for my viewing pleasure.

At the Paris Motor Show Mercedes-Benz Accessories showed a prototype of it's rear seat iPad docking station. Mounts onto the back of the front headrest, tilts, rotates and has it's own power supply and can be dealer fitted in 90 minutes.

Apparently - I will wait and see.

Tablets seem to be a good option these days, what with the advances in tech outstepping our car purchase cycles. My 2007 GL450's rear entertainment system became obsolete (in my eyes) before I took delivery, so when I re-upped into the 2010 GL this spring, it was sans rear entertainment. The last time my kids used spinning media was five years ago, and lugging DVDs around is, as the OP put it, so passé.

Regarding that other post about brain rot: my kids are obsessed with documentaries and history, not spongebob. I transcode DVRed documentaries into H.264 and stick them on Micro SD cards that we play on various android phones, my wife's MacBook 13, or whatever gadget I'm carrying around. A little velcro camera bag the size of a deck of cards carries about a dozen SD cards, some adapters (micro > mini > standard, USB, etc.) and a couple spare earbuds and provides a great library that my 7 and 9 year olds dive into when they are exhausted and want to chill. It's the only choice I give them if they want (and deserve) to be couch potatoes... no worse than anything we did 35 years ago. (Fondly recalls Pop Rocks, Slurpees and Space Invaders.)

I'm looking at Motorola's new tablet ( http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/20/m...eycomb-at-ces/ ) currently as my next experiment, as I've installed a 3G/4G WiMax mobile hotspot in my wife's 2010 GL as an always-on access point. Based on the carrier rollout where I am, I can reliably download content from my media server via 3G, and when approaching LA county, I've had some unexpected bursts of 4G traffic in my log files recently. This is of course experimental fun here, I'm not saying my family rolls around with us all jacked in like the Matrix.
