So I got eaten alive by a G35 because I met the Gov at 130mph. On my journey from the East over to the West I decided to make a stop in Phoenix. I had my foot on the pedal, I felt the HP and torque, and then after a couple seconds I felt nothing... as I watched the G35 pull away and the driver laughing almost in disbelief.

So is removing the Gov on the 4matic a bad idea or is it only for tire rating like non 4matics?

I ran my first MB at full throttle often. It was a US spec model that I picked up at the factory and drove on the Autobahn. That was in 1982 when only diesels were available in the US market. Mine was a 240D with a 4-speed manual transmisson. According to the owner's manual top speed was 84 MPH and cruising speed was 84 MPH. It would run 84 MPH easy on level roads, but after crossing the Rhine River between Mannheim and Kaiserslautern there is a long uphill climb where it would drop from 84 MPH to 65 MPH by the time it reached the crest of the hill.

A friend had one just like it except with an automatic. He always floored it when accelerating. When the transmission shifted it would snap your neck -- a world of difference between then and now!

It's not bad or good, just a personal preference... just know your limits is all.

They usually have the governor set at certain speeds due to tires. The 4Matic does not have high speed tires only all season. The limit would be set lower than the sport RWH with high speed staggered wheels and tires.
By the way, was this on a track or hwy when the G35 passed you at 130mph? How fast do you want to go?

Reading crap like this makes me wish M-B and everyone put 100 MPH limiters on ALL cars. Life ain't worth a stupid adrenaline rush, at least not an innocent persons. I smashed into a 700 car in a street race years back. Fortunately I learned my lesson.

Europe and U.S highways/laws/driving trainings couldn't be less comparable though.

Well, everyone is not interested on fast driving and not everyone that think can do it CAN NOT. However, some of us like fast driving and are capable of doing it safely.

If you are a fast driving loving person the experience on a stretch of unlimited Autobahn is a real thrill. When the car you are driving is made to handle the speed the drive does not even feel that fast and surely is not scary.

The biggest problem really is amongst the cars going slow and making stupid moves to fast lane without watching their back (rear view mirror). Other than that it is quite safe actually.

I personally did 250 km/h (155 mph) on an Audi A6 Avant Sports Line (3 L Diesel) and it was very easy. That car could have gone much faster but it was a rental with tire speed limit at 240 km/h.

There is a lot of talk going on in Germany right now about putting speed limits on Autobahns. A lot of folks over there think this is necessary and I think it is just a matter of time it will happen. This all means goodbye for cars made for extremely fast and safe driwing. What a shame it will be...

The only reason not to have a limiter (outside of Autobhan driving) is if you do events like the Texas Mile or the Mojave Mile. And even in a regular 1/4 mile drag (at a track) you're not going to get close to the limiter (figure a Renntech S65 AMG at maybe 128 tops at the end of the 1/4.)

The limiter doesn't make a whole lot of real world sense in itself since somebody can be in danger even at 100, or 120, etc.. But German manufacturers initially started the "gentlemen's agreement", limiting their vehicles to 155 mph, since high speeds are allowed on the Autobahn. But do we really want a 80-year old with bad reflexes or a 16-year old with bad judgment be able to hit 155 anytime, anywhere? (rhetorical question)

High top speeds beyond reason are realistically only about bragging rights and marketing to sell performance cars. Like Bugatti Veyrons.

Exactly. Long live speed limiters, so morons don't put my and my loved one's lives at risk during pointlessly selfish high speed blasts. I guess some have the benefit of never having known anyone/s who's life has been taken during high speed auto jaunts.

Before this car, I had an 05 G35 sedan, and on an empty highway early on a Sunday morning, I took it to 145mph.
But now I'm a married "grownup" and haven't even taken my MB to 100, and doubt I'll take it much beyond that.

There's always Tracks... There's a track in my town for all those that feel the need to speed. *for a small track charge* Of course...

If only everyone got their speed kicks only on drag strips and tracks, we wouldn't have so many innocents losing their lives when the said kicks truly rear their ugly irresponsible heads by going awry.

I have to agree with the detractors of speeding on occupied hi-ways,,there is no way of knowing what a driver with an ipad in one hand and the other on a steering wheel with a latte in it will do.
I took my 210 to 130 on an unoccupied hi-way at 530 am with no one in sight,,if I f****d up,,Im the only casualty.
Haven't really pushed the 212 up there yet but I will,once again,alone

Oh man If I ever do meet him,,hope he has hair like Blago, and a bank roll like Corzine

Seriously,,my motto is simple. Its not how fast you drive, its how you drive fast. Its not for everyone for sure and some are better than others.
