This is how it's supposed to work in all cars and I believe everyone's car is working correctly. The discussion got off track when someone suggested pressing the brake pedal twice.

Not exactly. Arrie has confirmed that HOLD on his car will disengage by hitting the brake pedal again.

My car will disengage the HOLD as well if you press the brake again while it's on HOLD. I had to press the break in the same way you do when you engage the HOLD. Not twice, just a firm push and the HOLD will disengage. Pressing it again will put it back on HOLD.

So, I'm not the only crazy one with a HOLD that can be disengaged by pressing the brake pedal.

Many thanks for the post.

You're not crazy. I tested my '13 yesterday and it also releases the HOLD feature when I press the brake or gas pedals.

Fascinating. It's just isn't happening on my '11. For what it's worth I did verify that HOLD works in reverse also.

I had a 2011 E350 before my 2010 E550. That car also released the HOLD with another step on the break.

Are you sure you are doing it correctly, i.e. after you stop the car and enable the HOLD with a quick hard press on the brake pedal you take your foot off of the pedal and then give it the quick hard press again?

I see now there are car models before and after yours doing it like mine so I would think your car should do it too...

my 2011 e550 only releases HOLD with a press of the gas. Tried the brake a few times and it didn't disengage HOLD.

Well, I thought I was, but apparently I was not.

It should, and does.

Will have to chalk this up to operator error/stupidity. I simply wasn't pressing the pedal hard enough to release HOLD - mine requires a pretty good shove.

Sorry, but to disagree. My works after the forum talk and mine can be put on hold after coming to a complete stop, then hitting the brake and the hit gas as to go. My theory is is your on hold, you would want to go before you have to tell your, transmission to go to neutral then go. My goes forward after a firm stop is press the brake hard after you come to a complete stop. Once on hold, hit the gas to go. Give your tans a break

I don't see how you can disagree with how my vehicle actually works. Mine will also disengage with a press on the gas which is how I normally use it but the fact remains that I can disengage HOLD by pressing on the brake.

Also, I do not believe the car changes the transmission out of drive when on HOLD. If it did wouldn't we feel that change like when we manually do it? I think it actually holds the brake electronically. These cars do have electronic assist on the brakes. Also the forward movement is too instant, IMO, when you hit the gas to go while on HOLD for it to switch the transmission.

The above is correct. HOLD will disengage with either pressing on the gas pedal OR (as Arrie explained and I subsequently found) another firm press on the brake pedal.

The transmission absolutely does NOT go into neutral when HOLD is engaged, it remains in gear.

Does it disengage if you pull resume of cruise control?

It remain in gear for a time, which I don't know but after the time runs out it goes on P with a bang if you car is on incline so if you decide to chat with your neighbor thru your car window it is better to put the car on park yourself.

I don't think the "bang" really cause damage or anything like that but it is not nice to hear it. Scared me once when it happened and I have taken care it will not happen again.

I have conducted a couple back and forth tests to figure out if depressing the brake pedal disengages the HOLD .In a single word : Yes
However with your HOLD activated ,you need to apply further pressure to the brake pedal to disengage HOLD then you do with the throttle pedal . When HOLD is on , you just need a slight touch and your car moves forwards .
Whereas when HOLD is active ,you need to depress further down the brake pedal to deactivate it .
I find it logic and wise approach too why two pedals have different affects / outcomes on the same feature . Because using HOLD is very useful when idling, waiting at the lights , parking and things like this and if it very useful to apply a slight pressure to get the car moving again rather than depress a heavy pressure .
+212 on HOLD feature's awesomeness as well
Have a good weekend

one interesting thing I've noticed is the difference between the ease of applying the hold in my CLS vs my S.........the S only requires a slight tap where the CLS needs more of a jab to engage the hold feature...

this thread is still going strong

I've had three 2014's by the luck of the draw in the last 12 months, all e's, and each one had a different brake feel... The first one had a nice smooth soft brake feel and easily engaged hold... The second was firm and was sticky in the initial travel of the brake and was tough to engage hold... And now this e63 is smooth but somewhere in the middle
