Gas Mileage Sample: 2011 E550 4Matic

My run from Atlantic City up the Garden State Parkway produced the following results, 26.7 mpg for 94 miles. An E550 4Matic rated at 23 mpg on the highway bests the rating by almost 4 mpg.

Yes that means nothing, I see this on my trip computer EVERY day on my daily commute to work of 55 miles each way.

I believe the trip computer gets confused if it travels on the slightest bit of a downhill slope. Anyway my daily average is 21mpg cruising @70mph all highway driving.

My overall average for my past 1200 miles is about 32 mpg. My lowest tank has been 26.7 (lots of City) and my highest has been 42 (all Hwy cruise set at 72). The Bluetec just amazes me.

for sure....bluetec is awesome!!!!! My average is 30 mpg for the life of the car 8000 miles so far a lot of city driving. On the highway I usually get 40-45 mpg 72 mph set on cruise...

How much of a back wind did you have ?! Just kidding ! That's pretty good for a 550. I usually see that on my 350. You were definately doing something right

those are good, but I think it was a 550 question?

I don't see how one could compare the 350 blue mileage to the 550

just saying

I've got only 80 miles on my new E550. At an average speed of 21 MPH, the computer says I'm averaging 16.4 MPG.

When I brought the car home driving some limited access highways and some streets with traffic, it showed 21.7.

I think EPA's new estimates are about right.

I'm still in "break-in" mode with my Bluetec so I haven't started any real measurements but I've had the trip computer up to 41mpg for one 60 mile Interstate trip at a constant 65mph.My experience with my BMW diesel suggests that mileage gets better with diesels as you approach 20K miles plus so it will be interesting when I reach *that* milestone.

MPG isn't why I bought my E350 ... I rate my ride in SPM (Smiles per Mile) and I'm W-A-Y ahead of the crowd!

I've had my 2011 E550 4M for about 7500 miles now. I get 22-23 in a normal mix of highway and city driving and 26-28 when on the highway.

The E550 is NOT better than the E350 MPG-wise. Not in the City, and not on the Highway, although they are closer than one might expect.

BTW, I got my first near-30 MPG on the Highway tonight. It was inching there, and I'm sure it would have made it, had I had more room to go. I'm hoping that this is a sign that with a more broken in motor (passed 8K Miles), and summer Gas blend, MPG's will be going up (already have been it seems).

MB engines seem to get better with some mileage. Usually by 10k or so you will see better mileage.

I wanted a bluetec no matter what until I drove one. Didn't care for the gravely feel and sounding engine, nor the suprisingly large tank of urea where the spare tire well is, and the requisite run-flats. Since you come out about even over the life over the life of the car vs. gas ($1500 higher initial cost plus I think it's about a grand to drain the urea at 100k miles), we decided we'd go with the gas engine. The bluetec was powerful though the extra torque wasn't felt over the gas engine. Both accelerated and felt about the same on streets and highway. But how I wanted to go 500 miles between fill-ups though!

Went 485 miles and filled 19.5 gallons after that. Almost all Interstate going 78 mph.

The 550 V8 is a wonderful engine. I was quite upset to see that the sticker on my 2008 S550 included a $1500 gas guzzler tax. The car averaged above 21 MPG combined city and highway driving for the entire time I owned it. My 2011 E550 is averaging 22.9 MPG for the first 4800 miles.

You didn't spend enough time with a diesel to fully appreciate it.You've got a least a couple of serious misconceptions about the Bluetec. One is that the urea issue isn't *nearly* as problematic or expensive as you think.Ten thousand miles worth of urea costs about $40 and takes about 10 minutes to fill yourself. It's *very* easy to do...I know, because I did it (out of curiosity) with my BMW diesel. Also,if the onboard computer is even *close* to being accurate you can get 800+ highway miles between fill-ups with the Bluetec.Just yesterday I took a 150 mile Interstate round trip and at the end the computer read 40.8mpg (I reset it at the start of the trip). And my experience with my BMW diesel strongly suggests that a diesel's mileage improves as it runs up the miles.

My best tank was right around 750 miles (743 if i remember correctly). I get AdBlue at either VW or Freightliner (MB branded AdBlue) most recently at roughly $5/Gal. It is actually as easy to fill the urea as it is to fill the windshield washer fluid and FAR less messy. There are many misconceptions about the urea injection diesels. I just cannot say enough good things about mine. In my area, most of the diesel pumps have a posted 40 min cetane rating. I recently found a Hess station that has 45 min cetane. The engine is noticable smoother, quieter, and peppier, plus, i am averaging about 3 mpg more. This has made me wish for a premium diesel (50+ cetane rating). The MB Blutec diesel is simply a gem.

I did about the same in my 350. 470 miles before the light came on. Fill up was under 19 gallons. May have been more miles than that if there had been no city driving during the trip.

Just did about 700 miles, Wilmington, NC to DC and back in a 2010 E350, not 4matic. 75 MPH most of the way on the cruse. 27 MPG up and close to 28.5 MPG back. Did not have the AC on most of the way back. Weather was too nice. I was thrilled with the economy.

Milage continues to get better as it breaks in. Total miles on the car at the start of this trip was about 10k.
