It was removed roughly half way through the 2010 build cycle, the old switch also had the old style pull for fogs Vs the seperate button we have now.

I hate the direction Mercedes is going. This is amongst the most annoying things up there with the NAV not letting input while the car is in motion! SO RETARDED!

Pretty soon, we won't even be able to steer the car!

Hey, it could be worse -the new BMW's have a new "feature" called automatic Start/Stop. Every time you come to a light the car turns off the engine and it restarts when you lift your foot off the brake. You need to defeat it every time you get in the car.

Am I the only person on the planet who believes in and owns and operates automobiles with full time all the time engine on headlights and tailights on since 1989? Sometimes I even add the fog lights. All 3 of them.
Apparently the new Mercedes-Benz in transit will break tradition in this regard.

I agree 1000%.Like most M-B owners,I have a normal IQ...or,perhaps,one that's a bit above normal.Given that fact I'm capable of turning my own lights on and off.The feature might have its usefulness...when you're on a long drive during which you know the sun will either rise or set for example. But having it as madatory is insane.

What I do to defeat it (partially) is to turn my parking lights on before I start up on a dreary day or at a time before sunset or after sunrise where lights are not needed...also when entering a garage or when leaving one.Not a perfect solution but....

I find this to be worse because it cannot be defeated. If start/stop couldn't be defeated that,to me,would make me white hot with rage!

Two big disadvantages to your "system"....1) our headlights cost a fortune (and probably cost a fortune for replacement labor as well)....2) your system increases the chances of (or,at least, increases the frequency of) an undetected headlight failure which could result in an accident or a chat with Mr Armed Tax Collector Policeman.

Ok. Please educate me. Serious as a stroke.
What is wrong with:
Engine on. Lights. on.
Engine off. Lights off.
Do any of you live in a state with a mandatory "Wipers on. Lights on." rule? That should be a global requirement.

...Also seems to be a great safety feature. I am more "annoyed" by other drivers that forget to turn their lights on at dusk, in the rain, or other times to make them move visable. I'll bet this feature prevents more accidents than the starbuks-coffee-cup-thingy on the dash.
^^^^^^^^ My point exactly. I can't count the number of times I see NumNuts operating unlit vehicles when it's too dark for such nonsense.

OK, granted, these are halogen bulbs obtainable almost anywhere and operator replaceable. Failed bulbs are indicated on the dash. Bulb life is in the neighborhood of multiple years. Front & rear.
Case in point: Mrs. Wayne & I were returning from Christmas in Blue Ridge, GA a couple years ago. Somewhere south of Chatanooga, in the afternoon, the headlight out warning light came on. No worries. I had 3 left. At the first available service station we exited the Interstate. Bought the correct bulb. Replaced it. Filled up. Got coffee. Away we went.

Seeing and being seen. Wondering if the Xenon Lighting Package was a smart move or not.

Perhaps you are. I'm cool with the new LED's that are designed into the cars aesthetic, but one reason that I buy a car is because it looks good, and nothing ruins the look of a car with lights on, full blaze, during daylight. Having HID's and LED's all around my car helps some, but I still prefer the look of a car without headlights/taillights on during the day. If someone is elderly enough, or has sight problems enough to where they can't make out cars in broad daylight, then I think they might be incapable to drive. Not to mention, that's what the brake-lights and now LED daytime running lights are for.

Same here. So due to M-B's cost-cutting the ability to turn lights off out of our cars, I have to have MORE inconvenience by repeatedly going to "Parking" then waiting a couple of minutes (until daylight registers into the cars brain) when I'm outside, and having to remember to switch it back to "A". Whether it does or doesn't diminish light longevity, I'd rather not diminish the life-span of my expensive HID's. Not to mention, I've heard you have to take the bumper off to replace headlights on these cars? Don't really want someone doing that to my car. Also, it is a Lease, but I like to treat my cars as if I'm keeping them forever.

Don't know if you were addressing me but I'll assume you were:

*If* all light failures are clearly displayed in the instrument cluster and *if* my lights (including halogens) are cheaply and easily replaced by the owner then my opposition to your position might soften noticeably.I didn't know about the instrument cluster warnings or about the ease, and the minor expense, involved in replacing bulbs...particularly the halogens.

However, there's still the matter of Xenons which I know for a fact cost a fortune even if they're replacable by the owner (IIRC,I've read that it's difficult and dangerous for an amateur to replace Xenons). As you know many of the folks here have Xenons rather than halogens.

Xenons are a whole new world for me. Or will be when the vehicle arrives. I shall adapt accordingly.
Everything I described earlier is true for the XC70. In fact, my Co-Pilot was quick to point out the loss of a low beam bulb & the need to replace it instantly.

As for the expense of an H1 bulb...They are very inexpensive at Walmart. However, their price rises in relation to their proximity to a lonsesome stretch of upstate Alabama Interstate highway. About $20 as I recall. Pleasing one's Co-Pilot is Priceless!

Somewhere in the literature, Mercedes-Benz explains the start up self test of the Active Xenon Lighting System. That explains that.

In Mercedes-Benz speak, "It ain't broke. Don't fix it."

Wayne
Who will be more conversant about Xenon lighting in about a month.

Disable DRL's

Hi. I don't know if this was mentioned somewhere else, but I want to install aftermarket xenon lights on my 2007 E350, and I'm being told that I need to disable the daytime running lights, so how do I do that?

Thanks!

I look at it like this... I just purchased this 5-year-old car a week ago, so I couldn't afford it otherwise

So... if anyone can let me know how to disable those, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

As well, when the day is super bright outside, my car fires up those expensive xenons, LED's, and interior ambient lighting, etc. for mere seconds/minutes, before I get out of/into the garage. This is certainly not good for the longevity of any of the cars lights, and can lead to annoying replacement requirements sooner.

To get around the headlights burning out sooner, I put the cars Parking lights on only, which helps, but then, all the other lights still switch on for those pointless seconds/minutes.

[Geezer Rant]
Be thankful every day that you have Xenon headlights. The alternative is not acceptable.
The AUTO switch is there for a reason: So brain dead folks don't go driving around in the dark without lights.
As for the conventional lights, they last years & years.
Find something important to worry about. Like IF/WHEN your 722.9 transmission will crap out.
[/Geezer Rant]

Enjoy your beautiful car.

Wonder if a work around would be to back into the garage? Open garage door before starting car going out and turning engine off before closing door coming in. Might work. Of course it may result in other expensive problems for some.
