DRL's were invented because having a light on the front of a moving vehicle is far safer than no lights at all. That's why they are mandatory, always on in Canada.
Railroads have known this for a hundred years - engine on, lights on.
I have the 2010 switch with the Off setting, but I have my DRL's enabled so it functions like the Auto switch when I enter garage, etc. EXCEPT, the entry light system (if enabled) only works when switch is set to Auto. This means that every time I push remote to open doors if in garage, the entry lights won't come on if set on Off. Will work if I set switch to Auto when out at night.
BTW, we probably spend far more on gas just driving in and out of garage than we ever will on new headlights.
Bottom line, auto on is a safety feature because of the people who never turn their lights on.

I'm driving a newer Lexus ES right now, and believe me, the Lexus can fly with a lighting system that detects when I'm getting closer to the sun for all I care, it doesn't compare in experience to the Benz.

An ES is a Lexus volume leader, I'd assume it's as "Lexus as it gets".

Yeah, the interior is sub-par for a Luxury car indeed. However, I've never been, driven, or ridden in a Lexus that impressed me more than the commonalities of a smooth and comfortable ride.
