Which tires do you have?

My 2010 has Pirelli tires. My 2007 seemed quieter and it had Conti's. Which tire do you have? What is your experience with Pirelli tires? They seem noisy to me.

My 2010 had Pirelli's, which I was jubilant about, since for whatever reason, P-Zero's have a "cool-factor" to me. I was upset to find Continentals on my then soon-to-be 2011, I mean, no "cool-factor" in that, right.

Turns out, that doesn't really matter, as indeed the Continentals seem to be quite a bit smoother, and quieter. My 2010 rode like hell over rough surfaces (in context to how it should ride, being a Mercedes Luxury Sedan), and I'm sure the Pirelli's perhaps had something to do with it. My 2011 seems to be a bit more composed over said rough patches.

Yeah I know what you mean about the "cool-factor" with the P-Zero's. I was fine with Conti's eventhough they did not look as cool as the p's. Ride and comfort are more important.

Yeah, the P's have a much cooler tread look too. But agreed, ride quality is #1 by a longshot.

I have the new Michelin Primacy's on my car. They are quiet and handle well but have stiffer sidewalls than the Conti's so have a harder ride. My take between the two would be Michelins quieter with better handling but not as comfortable ride. Regards. Ned.

I agree about the noise. I have Pirelli PZero Neros' on my 2010 E350 4Matic Sport with 8k+ miles on it. Some of the tollways near Chicago have grooved surfaces for wet and snow traction. The tires are deafeningly loud on this surface. Likewise any other slightly irregular surface. In decades of driving I have never had louder tires. Yes they are balanced, properly inflated and have been rotated. I have tried different inflation pressures within the recommended values for the vehicle.

I will say one thing I don't really like about the cont's is that they pick up EVERY single little pebble or rock, hehe....I have a special tiny computer screwdriver I use to slip them out of the grooves and tread......but that is really my only issue, I've never even considered
road noise, which I don't even notice....but I'm not tire expert....

The road noise is very loud. It's hard to hear the radio or hold a conversation without talking loud. On smooth roads the tires are fine. The ride is very firm. To avoid tire and wheel damage potholes are to be avoided at all costs with 18" tires and wheels.

Are the fronts and rear wheels supposed to be staggered like the older models?

If you don't have 4Matic the fronts and rears are different sizes. With 4Matic the tires are the same size.

Anyone else experiencing very loud noise with the Pirellis on grooved surfaces. If so how did you solve it?

Any tire recommendations?

Thanks. I have 4Matic. I also have Pirellis and I think they are noisy. Since I just got the car I'm not sure if it's the tire or the ride. I have seen past posts about Pirellis being noisy though which is why I lean torward the Pirellis being the cause. If I come across a grooved surface I will test it out and let you know.

No grooved surfaces yet but I did notice when slowing to a stop at about 20MPH I hear a humming sound. It sounds like the tire thread. It could also be brakes.

When the 2011 E550 Luxury that I ordered arrived with Michelin MXM4's on it, I was a very happy camper. I've owned German cars on and off since 1957 (not a typo) and I've had just about every European tire along with Bridgestones over the years. I've found that Michelin's Grand Touring All Season Tires are quiet, smooth riding and long lasting compared to the other tires I've owned.

Getting the Michelin's is just another plus that came with the Luxury model. I also have a nicer interior and non-staggered wheels that aren't going to give me a problem in the future.

I'm old enough that I've long passed letting my ego get in the way of my common sense. If I wanted a so-called sporty car, I wouldn't buy a Mercedes luxury sedan.
I have the e550 sport that came with 18 inch rims and Continental tires. When I had a double blowout in February, I bought a set of 17 inch rims and went to the Michelin Primacy's. They are definitely quieter than the Conti's. I was surprised that the ride didn't soften up as much as I would have expected going to the smaller rim and less low profiled tire. I was told that the sidewall of the Michelin was stiffer than the Conti's which accounts for there good handling performance but why I didn't notice as much of a softening to the ride. Overall, I'm happy with the tires. Regards. Ned.

Recently replaced very noisy stock Continentals on my 2007 E550 with Michelin PS2's. Very happy!

Replaced the rear stock conti's also w/ Michelin Pilot Sports but I have the all-season variant. I don't push the luxury barge to the limits but I haven't noticed any difference from stock. The 500 threadwear certainly beats the 200 on the stock tires though.

ps. I learned the hard way, don't put tires on a leather seat. Tire sidewalls will stain the leather seat and NOTHING will take it out. Take my advice and don't even try to manually remove it. I searched boards talked to detailers and tried aggressive methods of removal.

The only thing which works is re-dying the leather. $65 bones and looks like new again.

Michelin pilot sport. Put the P-Zero and factory rims on the 211. The Michelin's were all around better rated than the P-Zero's. I haven't really noticed any difference in anythng other than a slight increase in road noise. That's going from an 18'' rim with P-Zero's to a 19with the Michellins and I figure having a little less rubber will increase the noise. I didn't notice a ride difference at all though.

I think I'm going with the conti's. I had them on my 07 E350 and liked them. Those with conti's, which one do you have?

Any interested in a set of Pirelli PZero Nero All Seasons?

If you are looking for summer tires (not all season) I recommend Nokian Z G2. I understand you have a 4-Matic so your original tire size is 245/40-R18. They have this size.

I have the staggered tires but I am still thinking to get these Nokians even when they do not have the 265/35-R18 size for my rear wheels.

You get these and I guarantee you will not be dissapointed!

If you don't like them I'll buy them from you for my car. Need new tires in about 5 months. Just don't get the run flats.

Nokian is not very well known tire company and not advertized here in N.A. What they are known of are winter tires as they make the best winter tires money can buy.

They have been making summer tires for long time now also using the excellent rubber compound they developed with winter tires. The grip on wet road is unbelievable and tires last 50% longer than other high performance tire brands.

I have had three sets of Nokian tires in my cars and probably will get them for my E350 also regardless of the fact that I need to sacrifice the staggered setup. The best tires from them that I had called NRZi that they do not make any more lasted 60000 miles and this tire had grip that would not let me spin rear wheels on wet road on a Ford Crown Vic, which with Michelins it came with had to be driven very carefully on wet roads to keep rear from fish tailing.

Look at nokiantyres.com.

Not so fast...

Before you purchase Continentals... I replaced the factory Continentals on both my C350 and E550 with Michelin Pilot Sports. These were highly recommended by both shops where I take my cars. I'm very glad I switched - quieter, stickier, seem to handle better - but, really, it's very hard to tell.
