What is the latest version of the navigation map for w212 and can I download it online somewhere? (no lectures please).

Not sure what the latest version is but, no, you can't download it. The only way to get map upgrades, which don't come that often, is to purchase CD's from either dealer or go to the NAVTEQ site and purchase them direct. Cost if I remember is about $250 -$299.

Received an e-mail last week from MBUSA re: updated nav. $250, more or less, from the dealer.

Go to www.navigation.com and on the left side, enter your vehicle information. It will tell you what the latest upgrade will be.

I checked 2011 W212's and they are up to date.

I went to the NAVTEQ site and it just refers me to Mercedes - maybe they took it off so owners can't tell if they have the latest maps. Mine certainly seems to be missing a lot of new roads.

There is a 2011/2012 map for the US...it's installed in my comand 4.5 car. Not sure if it's compatible or available for comand 4.0 cars though.

Just visited the Navteq site and it shows an update (v.6) for 2010-11 E's.

Be aware that just because there is a new map version out does not mean that new roads in your area are mapped.

The map makers do not remap the entire US every year. In fact, some areas of the US are still badly mapped and the NAVTEQ and Telemap people are focusing on those areas. The greater DC area, for example, hasn't had a map update for about 5years.

NAVTEQ used to post what areas were updated on their website. They don't do that anymore - probably because it reduced the sales of map updates.

They will, however, answer if you ask them directly when your area was updated - you may be surprised.

And to answer your question about bootleg copies, the answer is no. If you can afford the car then you should be able to afford the map update - which most likely isn't needed anyway.

As a retired software developer, this bothers me tremendously. Typically, software and databases like the map data are sold with a single user license. You do not own the software, you are only granted the right to use it.

On the W204 forum they do "group buys" whenever new maps come out. These consist of a dozen or two people dividing the cost and shipping the disc around the country updating their cars. This is both illegal and (IMHO) immoral.

As CEB says, if you can afford the car, you can afford the update. The fact that you think the price is too high does not justify stealing it.

Regards,
Don

The BMW people have come up with a good workaround. The map updates are easily available but the install requires a car specific code. That code is only available once the car is connected to the computer inGermany - and the code is never displayed.

I suspect that MB will go the same way soon. All because of people who don't understand that making copies of software is theft - and depending on the cost of the software and the jurisdiction, it could be a felony - but the OP doesn't want a lecture because be knows it is theft.

This is not petty crime.
