NEW OWNER'S MANUAL - SEDAN/WAGON

E550 purchased January 4.

The Owner's Manual, shown as "Edition B 2011" on the back cover, immediately began falling apart. One by one, the pages started coming out, until about half of them had spalled off the manual. Clearly a binding defect.

My great dealer service department replaced it.

The new Owner's Manual is shown as "Edition C 2011." There are differences, because page numbers for given subjects have changed, but I have no idea how much, or less, real data has changed. (Stuff that was on page 278 is now on page 272.) The total page count is 9 pages less in the new one --- probably the lawyers made the warnings more concise . . . and threatening. ***

They certainly did not correct the instructions for calibrating the mirror compass --- the manual still points to a button on the right of the mirror, which does not exist, when the button is actually a recessed button (in a hole) on the left that you access with a genuine Daimler Benz Compass Access Tool, Mark 1, Mod 2, ("Compassblitzen Grabben Schplitzenbenden") otherwise known as a bent paper clip.

Contrary to some opinions I've heard, the mirror compass is not synchronized with the COMAND compass -- they are not related. You need to calibrate the one in the mirror -- and they will at times disagree.

Anyway, if your manual is falling apart, you should be able to get a new one if you are in initial warranty, unless your dealer is a hard case --- in which case buy your next MBZ, an S 65 AMG, from another dealer.

*** Wouldn't it be nice if there could be just one warning, "Anything in this car can kill you, and it's not our fault, especially if you drive too fast for conditions, including your alcohol or drug content, or simply do something stupid, or even more stupid like texting or sexting, or simply misunderstand that a semi or UPS delivery truck always has the absolute right-of-way." The manual would then be about 40 pages of good solid, uninterrupted, useful, understandable information. . . . Oh, well . . .
