close trunk with smart key?

My cls trunk could be closed with the smart key, but I haven't been able to get the E to do it. Open, yes. Close, No. Is this right? The manual is ambiguous.

I don't think that you can do it on the E with the smart key. My E63 doesn't do it. My GL however does. Not sure why they would do that, especially when you can close it from the button inside the trunk lid...

I regret to say that I have become disappointed with my purchase. I have found so many features that are needlessly inferior. I have come to the conclusion that the E's are deliberately "cheapened" so that the overpriced S and ClS appear to be worth the difference. My CLS was definitely a superior car - even though the CLS is a dressed up E...but not worth $20 grand more! I no longer believe that the E is worth $60,000, there are a number of superior cars that cost far less.

Do you have the power trunk option on your E? If not, it won't work. I have it on my E550, and pressing the trunk button on the key opens and closes it.

The list of less expensive cars with better options is verrrry long, infiniti has been mentioned - add Lexus, Lincoln, Cadillac, even Buick! The E, even optioned out just does not impress me as a + $60 grand car with a plastic dash, no option to heat/cool the rear seats - perforated in front, plain in back....they even dropped the ac outlet...even though it is in the brochure!
I have the power trunk button, opens/closes the deck lid, but the smart key button only opens. It seems that every time I look, there is another feature that Merz decided we weren't worth. It looks like they want you to buy an S or you are not worthy. After all, what should you expect for a mere $65 grand or so?

Every option available. I was moving from a CLS to an E because I needed a larger back seat and didn't feel that the image of a boulevard racer was appropriate; but cannot stand the idea of blank switches and buttons. They just scream "cheap" to me.

To each his own. Totally understand where you are coming from. My sister has a CLS that I drove around a day. Liked my W211 and now my W212 more than the CLS...

Oh, I am just ranting because it seems that Merz is slighting us. The car is comfortable, drives like a dream, and did I mention beautiful.

Pano, P1, Option Wheels, not sure what else but I think thats it.

I bought the car more for long term. Never had a car for over 4 years and with the economy the way it is and my being in real estate and having 2 young kids, trying to hold this one a little longer. Figured when/if I get out of warranty, didn't want to have to fork over the bigger bucks for costlier/option items like power trunk, dynamic seats, airmatic, and whatnot.

There's your answer, buy one of the other brands. If a Lexus does it for you,why not...but none of them can build a MB unfortunately.

I was wrong, my E550 DOES NOT close the trunk using the key fob. It will close it from the inside of the car which is where I'd want it to work.

Why did you buy the car then? Did you not notice the blank switches and buttons prior?

My 2011 E550 P2, etc, will not close the trunk from the fob. But it will from the driver compartment button.

I wonder if somebody got hurt and the lawyers took over????

Drove a few 1st gen CLS's before I got my W212, and no question, I feel car-for-car, the W211 was a better car (better driving position, more functional, less flashy but more durable and lasting interior, much better visibility). The W212 is a whole different (upper) league in engineering and functionality over the 1st CLS (and not much different from the current CLS, in fact basically the same). As for Options and features, I don't wouldn't doubt that the CLS has it over the E in that aspect, and of course the fancier interior materials (that is, after all, what you're really paying for), which btw don't wear as well as the more blunt plastics in the E.

Ok now it went from less expensive cars that are superior to less expensive cars with better options. Sure your always going to find cars that have "other" options that a more expensive car may not have. But I can give you a list of options none of the cars above or in the world have but benz. I guess it boils down to what options are important to you, from buttons to coeficient of drag.

Never buy a Benz for the tech/gadgetry or frills. Although they are fine in those areas, you can always find cheaper cars with more tech/options (namely Japanese automakers). You buy a Benz for the engineering, workmanship, overall quality in many different areas, etc. etc. If those don't do it for you, or if you don't feel that M-B has enough to offer for the price tag, then indeed it would be the wrong choice of car! Fortunately for me, Tech is always on the back-burner when I choose a car (it's a nice plus once I've figured out which car I want that meets my criteria in my important areas, though).

I always thought MB did well with tech gadgetry and options and many of them others don't have. I know I like the card reader and MB was one of the 1st in that area. Rain sensing wipers, auto closing trunks, tele aid & consier service. Climate controlled glove box, auto dimming driver mirror, 14 way adjustable seats with 4 position lumbar (that is some impressive adjustability). Ambient lighting at no extra cost. Attention assist, panaramic sunroof, real hand polished wood, dynamic seat with massage, rear sunshade just to name a few.

Agreed. It's enough for me, .

Iff anything, I'd say that if there's a car to be upset about, re: "Tech/Options", it would be the CLS. Identical to the E-Class, save for a few things like LED headlights, etc. (which are already starting to get incorporated across the board), same command, LCD Display, gadgets, but for a much higher price.

I have the P1, pano and sport packages. I bought last august when 2011 models were already being sold, so got a good deal off the lot on a 2010....
