Insurance surprise

After going from an '09 C300 to an '11 E350, I was surprised to find that my insurance (State Farm) only increased about $30/yr. Is this typical? Seems a bargain to me considering the relative values of the two cars.

Regards,
Don

I think it mostly depends on your age and driving record and I Think they probably also factor in the claims history for a certain model as well. When I bought my E550 I too was pleasantly surprised that the insurance payment was not that much higher than for my 10 year old Volvo.

If you are to believe Mercedes marketing with the the E class you can look the other way, become distracted, fall asleep, and the car will safely stop in the middle of a Mercedes commercial

same here, my insurance on my 11 W212 is very low too. It must be the safety features that comes with the car makes the insurance so slow.

New car/safer car

I went from an '07 Hyundai Azera to a '10 E350 and insurance only went up $50 per year.
My policy showed that I got a discount for having a "new car." Not sure why, but may be that newer cars are considered safer than older ones and maybe less costly to repair.
Also, M-B is well known for its safety features and solid construction.

I didn't see much difference between the 2008 E350 we replaced with a 2011 E550 (State Farm).

Back in the day, we had an '84 MB 190D and an '84 BMW 318i. The insurance on the BMW was much higher than on the 190D. I think it had to do with BMW's having higher insurance rates in general but maybe it was because we couldn't go fast enough in the little diesel to get into trouble

That's interesting. I would have thought that the V8 would have meant a significant increase.

I've been with State Farm for most of my (lenthy) adult life and have always found them to be fair, ethical, and reasonably priced.

Don

It surprised us too. I called the agent before I bought the E550 to find out what the difference would be and I think it was about $50. She turned out to be right.

I had a similar pleasant surprise from State Farm coming from a Toyota Avalon to a loaded E550 Luxury.

I wonder how much they track models. Is it possible that E550s, even though more expensive and powerful, are much less likely to be involved in accidents, and produce less injury in accidents, and thus the safety margin covers most of the normally expected increase in premium. (It just might be that E550s are purchased by an older, more conservative [behaviorally, not politically] cohort.)

Insurance companies are just loaded with data and are heavily engaged in analytics to help them with pricing.

Just got a $10.23 check from the insurance company after adjusting my policy from a 2011 Infiniti M37 to a 2011 Mercedes e350 BlueTec.

My insurance is only going up about $37 coming from an '11 C300, I was rather happy about it. Just waiting for my car to come in from the VPC.

2011 e350 4matic, 2010 Honda Pilot
I went from an '06 Acura RL to an '11 e350 and my insurance went up $40.00 a year. since i had checked this before i bought the car i had asked about an e-550 as well. I had the VIN's of the cars i was looking at so they used those to calculate the rates so i know they were accurate.
I bring that up because the e-550 was exactly the same rate as the e-350.
