ALL sedans built in July and August have the newer COMAND with higher resolution display and the new color instrument cluster. By the way, the globe in Europe is for internet. In North America, the globe is Sirius Weather. Just call your dealer and ask for the build date. If they tell you July or August, you'll have the new stuff.
ONE MORE NOTICE: Some cars built in June also have the new color display, but not the new navigation system (Codenamed NTG4.5) with a SD card slot, moved iPod integration, & Sirius Weather.

Look for code 068 - that's the factory code to denote the changeover to the new IC. The code for the new NTG 4.5 is 527, the old NTG 4.0212 is 512. The two changes did not happen in sync.

actually it is a bit wrong info
512 - Comand APS with DVD Changer
527 - comand APS without DVD Changer
088 - NTG 4.5 code (STEUERCODE NTG 4.5)
068 - no idea - cannot comment (it says MODIFICATION YEAR 11/0 SCALE 2)

527 was only offered in North America in conjunction with NTG 4.5 in order to resolve a supply issue related to the DVD changer (512). In Europe you could get either 512 or 527. Hence the reason I didn't mention 088.

that is weird VIN I got from other member (I do not give identity to respect if he doesn't want to share) has 088 - NTG 4.5 and 512 Comand with DVD Changer (I checked from EPC) and US car

Does that mean its got the new system?

as far as I understood from EPC you need to have color Instrument cluster to be able to use NTG 4.5 and whatever VIN I have checked with NTG 4.5 they all had 068, but as I told I am not sure if it indicate new Instrument cluster but I am 99.9999% sure car you are looking should have new color instrument cluster (since you got VIN, login EPC and check under 54 / 585 and let us know the part number then I can comment

Color me wrong! We held off on 512 + 088 for Canada until MY12 while the supply shortage worked itself out. While I believe the DVD changer is useless, that's the best of both worlds.

Don't the old Commands also have DVD Changers? (Mine does). Or does "DVD Changer" signify a separate Changer where you put DVD's (from the CD/DVD Changer).

old Comand also came with DVD Changer (option 512), if NTG 4.5 is not offered with 512 option then as said they had supply problem for 527 (without DVD changer) model, in Europe both offered as option
