HID Conversion

Hi, I just leased the 2011 E350 4matic with the P1 Package (they had no more p2 packages). I searched everywhere and couldn't find which bulbs I should use to convert it to HID. Anyone know of a good conversion kit and bulb that I can buy? I was thinking about getting MTEC. Also, is it the same bulbs as the 2008 CLK350? If it is, I can save some money on just taking it off of that car since I am returning the lease by next week. I am looking to get 6k bulbs. Please state the bulb size. Thanks in advance!

I searched the forum, people just posted about installments. No one listed the size. Anyway, I found it on this site, H7 bulbs. I hope the info is correct.

I've searched extensively in this forum in regards to which kits to use, etc, and didn't really come up with much. I wish people would all just post pics of the lights/product used in one thread.

Would you be able to run an HID conversion on a lease? I know the ballasts would be mounted but is everything easily removable/returnable to stock?

Oh God, not another aftermarket blinder thread.

There is no legal aftermarket conversion kit. Read this. Make sure to read the link in the link.

I read your whole argument on the other thread prior to posting this. I am well aware it is illegal but the dealerships I contacted all ran out of P2. I am left with a P1 with ugly headlights. Time to convert...

It should be easy. It's basically plug and play. My friend just told me I have to get an error free kit though, that way the error won't pop up on the car. Once I find the bulbs/kit I like, I'll update you on this thread.

HID

I did my car few months ago with Phillips H7 conversion kit. Did not have a problem at all. No flickering or error messages.

Tfilal, I've seen his posts before about the "blinders" as well, in which I beg to differ. 5000k HIDs or even 6000k offer a subtle look and rarely blind oncoming traffic. Especially with the use of a projector housing like we have. Don't worry about the legality of it.

In regards to installing on a lease, I was just wondering if any permanent mounting of the ballasts, etc, would be easily removable at lease end, thanks for the comments though.

Sotomd, is this an actual philips xenon product or an aftermarket site selling Philips branded products?

Im quite surprised the HID conversion kit didn't trip an error code on the dash. I thought you need to take it to the MB diagnostics to reset the code to take HIDs.

Did you read the link and comprehend why you can't just use that drop in bulb? Apparently not.

The kit is an original Phillip Xenon Kit and I did the installation myself with no problems.

It took about 40 minutes for me to complete the installation.

I agree...i hate blinders. Unfortunately, everybody does it..even though HID kits claim to be for off-road use only...its everywhere. It really is noticeable when older cars have them...not because they are blinders, but simply the technology didn't exist at the time...LOL!!

Projectors are better than refractory housings cuz most have a nice cutoff line. For high end cars with halogen projectors, i'd install it and call it a day, but stick with 6000K....really white with a hint of blue.

Post pics of your cutoff lines....interested to see how sharp the non-HID projectors w/ HID kit are vs bi-xenon HID projectors.

You have to purposely look for a kit that has error free.

Actually yes, I did. And even after reading I'm still considering an HID conversion. Is your opinion on the look of the HID's going to make me refrain from installing a kit? Apparently not. Why the sarcasm? I presume someone's having a bad day.

If something happens or it doesn't look right, I remove the kit and return my lights back to stock, it's as simple as that. I like the way aftermarket full HID kits look in a stock projector housing, and I've seen 5000-6000k kits on cars with stock projector style headlamps and it looks fine.

I agree with you 100%. 5k and 6k will not blind anyone on the road unless you have some serious problems. Now 10k is a different story, especially on SUVs. Our 5k and 6k bulbs will not cause any problem on the road at all.

Tflilal,

I got the h7 6k error free mtec kit off eBay from a premium mtec seller. They're supposed to be error free so well see how it goes. I will be installing myself most likely next week.

"Off Road" is not a term that is in any regulation. If a part can be fitted to a road legal car then it needs to meet all the requirements for that part.

I'm not worried about the "look" but I am worried about a ****-poor install on a $60k car that is illegal because there is no way to design an aftermarket lamp that will not blind oncoming traffic.

Do you understand what 5000k and 6000k even mean? It appears not. Color temp affects both light output and the ability of the eye (and brain) to see.

Do what you want - just be aware that what you are doing is a hazard to other drivers and to yourself.

i love how this guy is on here for answers and all you guys do is complain. i have a p1 with aftermarket HIDs , THERE is absolutely no complaint in the 1 year i have them from oncoming motorist. Especially since we have projector beams. Just corny. Mtec i heard is the cheaper of brands, try xenonking.com, 12 months strong.

Actually, it appears no one here understands color temperature. Colors above 5000k are considered "cooler" colors (more blue-ish) below 5000k colors are considered "warmer" (reddish) The color temperature has to do with the color spectrum. Her is a brief definition:

Color temperature is a characteristic of visible light that has important applications in lighting, photography, videography, publishing, manufacturing, astrophysics, and other fields. The color temperature of a light source is the temperature of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates light of comparable hue to that of the light source. Color temperature is conventionally stated in the unit of absolute temperature, the kelvin, having the unit symbol K.
Color temperatures over 5,000K are called cool colors (blueish white), while lower color temperatures (2,700–3,000 K) are called warm colors (yellowish white through red).[1]
