How in the hell do you guys twist that wire around? How rough are you with the thing???? Just pull the cap off, put it on the little holder, make sure not to mistake it for your shoelaces, and put it back!!!! Am I missing something?

I don't know - I think my left-handedness gets the best of me!

Happened to me today, not sure if during driving or after car wash.

Hope they have spares in stock.

It's hard to believe that the gas door can actually fall off while driving.... LOL

The gas door simply snaps on the hinge.

They come unpainted so will take a couple of weeks to get it fixed.

Is anyone else around here annoyed that the gas cap/door on the W212 is plastic? On my W209 CLK55 it was metal, which is the way it's supposed to be!

On the positive side, I guess there are some weight-savings, now that it's plastics?

I am not annoyed but perplexed when I touched that part with my fingers lol . Seriously, I believe it must be from cost saving rather than weight saving .I don't mind it . This is a quality car inside / outside

I'm not. The front and rear bumpers, grill, and lights are all a form of plastic. I haven't had any problems with my car. Of course I treat mine with much TLC.

It's a Mercedes, not a tank.

These car's are still plenty heavy with the plastic fuel door I would prefer metal everything like the W124 but times change and no big deal...

Take my word for it, quality trumps everything. Having said that, weight is also a big issue. They look for weight savings everywhere because of the pressure for high fuel mileage. My CLS has an aluminum hood like all E's but it also has aluminum front fenders. That is not a cost savings issue, it's a weight issue with significant cost.

Had the same problem. Gas cap door wouldn't close because of the lanyard. It has to be roughly 6 o'clock or towards the bottom of the gas cap.

I have a problem with the gas cap as well . It first happened yesterday and I have noticed that it is not locking at all unless I give it a push with my finger and touch the square door button to lock the car but it doesn't seem to work when you get in the car because even if you lock the car , the gas lid from not sitting properly won't lock .

Having stretched the lanyard towards the bottom of the cap ,it worked as supposed to be . Thanks everyone namely 1985mb for your instructions

This happened to me once with my E. After studing the problem for 5-10 seconds and repositioning the gas cap lanyard, this "problem" was resolved to my satisfaction. That this tread is on its second page is alrming in its own right. I can't wait to read the morbid details about the first one to somehow strangle themselves, or, better yet, a loved one, or better still a whole group of loved ones, due to this "dangling lanyard" situation.

Mine didn't completely fall off, but the hinge is definitely broken so it just hangs limp & ugly .

Gas cap door

I just want to thank everyone. My door to the gas tank was not closing, and after reading here, I placed the lanyard facing to 6 o'clock and it closed. I can now cancel my appointment.

Thanks again,

Mike
