Prepaid Maintenance Transferable?

I was going to sell my 2011 E350 and I was just wondering of the 3 year prepaid mainenance was transferable to the new owner when i sell it.

I was told it was, since it is attached to the car's VIN and not the owner. But now that I am trading in the car, the dealership said it is not.

You may want to check the paperwork that came with your car.

For BMW it is very clear. The extended maintenance attaches to the car like any other option (like an upgraded radio or a pano roof) and always stays with the car. It isn't refundable but you probably also won't get anything for it on trade in.

The only winner is the next owner of the car - assuming that MB works like BMW.

i'm sorry. i got it wrong. the fee i was talking about is for first class wheel and tire protection plan. i think there is no charge to do a transfer for exterior and interior vehicle appearance protection program. as for the prepaid maintenance, i would like to know as well.

so if the prepaid service is not transferrable, then ask for the pro-rated refund.

That doesn't work for BMW. I doubt that it works for Mercedes.

ok, here is what i found from their site and it is transferable:

  • Is this plan transferable?
Answer: Yes, if you are selling to an individual you may transfer any remaining coverage. Please contact your local dealer for directions on how to transfer your plan.

Just confirmed with Benz USA. If you purchased the car from the individual whom purchased the maintenance plan---then yes, it's transferable. If you purchased the car from Benz or other dealers---then no, it's not transferable.

Well, if this is true then partially good. When I traded my E350 in I was told that the pre paid maintenance is not transferable in any case. I was told that if I would sell the car to a private party the pre paid maintenance would work if the new owner would pose as me. MB service would not go after it in that case.

Perhaps they changed the rules...?

From what I've heard in practice it does transfer, but the contractual paperwork says it does not. YMMV

Hello I recently purchased a 2014 E350 with 20K miles and I have registered it on MercedesMe. I also see that the car has not had the first 10K maintenance done by Mercedes. Which is wired bc its damn paid for. And it's got me thinking why would someone pay for a 3 year service plan and not use it or go to other cheaper shops. And I see in the car fax they have had the car looked at at other places. Long story short the car has a prepaid maintenance plan and according to MercedesMe app it's attached to the VIN it was able to pull it up once I entered the VIN. I called Mercedes to schedule my maintenance service and they said no because somebody else paid for the maintenance plan. The sales advisor was dumb enough to give me the first and last name of the original owner that bought the pre paid maintenance plan. Now my question is can I call them and say "I am going to be dropping off a Benz for my aunt, she would like 10k service done that is on her plan. And she is going to be traveling on vacation so I am to drop off her Mercedes to get the service and I give them her name On the maintenance plan. And whatever and they do the maintenance I pick up the car. How would that go?"

Do it. It does follow the VIN, mine had one left on it when I bought it, so my last service was free. Can't complain about that!

You could take it to another dealer as well and just not say anything about it. I didn't know mine had a credit on it, so I was surprised to get the bill and it was $0.00

I was told that if I sell or give the car to another private party, then it is transferable. But not if I sell to a dealer. Since you know who owned it, just tell them that's who you bought it from. Unless you bought it from them.

Worth a shot.

Hope this helps. I bought my CPO 2016 E350 from a dealer and it came with 5 yr pre-paid maintenance, and I called them and confirmed it. I did not pay for it explicitly. I guess it was purchased by previous owner.

Sales guy is correct. I had it on my 2011 E350 but kept the car for only about 15 months. I asked dealer service if I can get money back for the unused portion of it and the answer was no. Then I asked if I trade the car in if the next owner gets the benefit of it and the answer was the same no.

Then I was told that if I sold the car to a private party it would work if the new owner came to mb service posing as me. They would not go digging deeper about it.

If the car goes thru a dealer they null the service plan out.

Well I guess that's their policy, but on the surface it appears the original purchaser is owed something. On my CPO Audi I got the previous owners's prepaid maintenance.

Also MB's sales brochure states prepaid maintenance includes these benefits: "Potential increase in resale value"
