Grill Swap

I've seen a lot of these on the forum but I am wondering where most people are getting their grills from

Several suppliers on ebay they range in price from 165-250.
Just ordered 2012 E350 Black with P2 want to put the star on the grill and swap the star on the hood for a badge.

I think I'll keep chrome and not black it out as some have done.

I'd love some suggestions on what people are happy (or unhappy ) with.

Thanks

Shawn

I see you have P2. If you have the "radar" stuff, i.e., DISTRONIC, you need to be sure it will work with the new grill. For example, my E550 has the dorky clear plastic thingy embedded in the grill, through which it "sees" stuff and keeps me safe.

Lane assist and blind spot assist only. Does that count? Pics of "dorky clear plastic thingy"?

I'm pretty sure that if you have Lane Assist and Blind Spot Assist, you also have DISTRONIC, which includes Pre-Safe braking. That's the deal with 2011 and 2012 E550, per MBZ.

It includes a clear plastic insert over the middle third of the grill. I'm assuming that the "radar" (or is it IR?) is right behind that. The insert is almost invisible.

======== Per MBZ

This advanced, radar-based cruise control monitors the vehicle ahead and adjusts your speed to help maintain a chosen following distance. On long trips, DISTRONIC PLUS reduces the need to repeatedly adjust the cruise control setting. It offers true stop-and-go functionality, as it can bring the car to a halt if it senses stopped traffic, then resume automatically. Should the car ahead suddenly slow down or stop, the PRE-SAFE Brake system automatically engages up to 40% of available braking power and primes the brakes to deliver full power the moment you step on the brake pedal. If the brakes have not been applied within 0.6 seconds of a calculated impact, PRE-SAFE Brake will automatically engage them at 100% power. As an added safety precaution, a Proximity Warning System will issue an audiovisual warning if the calculated closing speed indicates that insufficient braking power has been applied by the driver.

====================

This thing is almost scary. You can be rolling along with cruise control at 75mph, listening to Diana Krall, and then suddenly discover you are doing 65mph about 140 feet behind the slow-poke car in front of you. Pull out into the passing lane and it picks right back up. I love it; some people hate it. Turn it off if you want. I like the Pre-Safe thing. (I'm a very conservative driver.)

I'll add this.

If you get a big bug splat on that clear plastic window, DISTRONIC will shut down and give you a message.

After a while, it will let you restart cruise control. I guess it get's used to the dead bug. <GG>

Yes, I was wrong. You can get those two separately.

FYI: heard from 5th gear today regarding distronic and here was the response

HI

please see this as example.

http://www.55tech.com/index.php?main...f20f38e1236f57
above link, this grill has mesh in the center( behind the star), this type will not work with distronic.

and this one
http://www.55tech.com/index.php?main...roducts_id=385
this one has solid plastic piece behind the star, this one WILL work with distronic.

so for the w212 grill, we only have it with the mesh right now, the one that will work with distronic will be available next week.

you are actually the second buyer who asked about distronic grill for w212 models, so we will get some and sell them on ebay too.
