2012 E 350 Oil Change

According to the owner's manual, the first oil change is not until one year or 10,000 miles. That seems like a long time. Is this what most owners follow? I just took delivery last week so I have a while to decide.

Do as your manual recommends....don't try to be smarter than the guys who built it.

Old days or just ten years ago MBZ's diesel car oil would turn black in just 3 hours after fresh oil change but it has changed now. Oil change interval is same as gasoline engine with W212 BlueTec diesel car. What a change in technology.

Although it might not be necessary I'm planning to double up on oil changes...every 5K miles.I paid good $$$ for my Bluetec and plan to keep it a *long* time.

I had a 2011 E350 and I changed oil at every 5000 miles. If I was you I would at least do the first oil change at 5000 miles. Reason for long oil change interval is big oil volume, i.e. 8 qt. It is about twice as much as normal V6 engine has that I am used to so it should take twice as many miles to ruin it too. I still feel a little worried about 10 000 miles between changes though so I decided to do it at every 5000 miles. And my E350 did not burn any oil at all. I did not need to add any oil between changes, which I understand is not the case with everyone.

I now drive a 2010 E550, which does burn some oil. It had 15 000 miles on the clock when I bought it and by service records it had itrs first oil change at 5000 miles and next one at 14 700 miles. I'm planning to have it serviced again at 20 000.

Wonder how oil consumption is in general amongst other E drivers?

It could be an overkill with a diesel as the fuel itseld already is very well lubricationg oil but for sure it does not harm the engine to do it.

It is over kill. Oil today is made so much better than in the past. Remember you have Mobil 1 in the car.

The first one I'd do early (around 3,000 miles) just to get the oil shavings and other debris out from the break-in period but after that I'd stick with what the manual says. The Mobil 1 used by our cars is remarkably slick and does not break down under heat like older oils do. If you think 10,000 miles is too long check out Porsche. The wife's Cayenne requires oil changes every 15,000 miles but previous Porsche service intervals recommendations were at 20,000 miles ! Contrast that with Audi which required oil changes at 5,000 miles which were quite annoying from a time management point of view. I like MBs 10,000 or 1 year policy. I only have to take my car in once a year; even I can tolerate that.

Chevrolet Chevette, Ford Pinto, Pontiac Aztek, Trabant, Yugo GV (and all the worst cars ever built)
My former MB was 13 years old by the time I exchanged it for the 2012 wagon. I changed the oil with Mobil 1 (doing it myself) every 3,500 miles or so. All those years the engine purred like a kitten and I never ever had an engine related problem.

I makes sense. I did oil change only every 10,000 miles, and after 10 years I had to replace sparks plugs. If I did oil change more frequently, I would avoid the repair.

Having to replace spark plugs after 10 years has nothing to do with oil change intervals. In fact, that is pretty impressive. Many of todays oils have additive packages that don't even fully deploy until after 5K miles. So frequent oil changes may not let you reap the benefits of the modern motor oils. Do what makes you sleep better at night time, but, there is nothing wrong with following the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

Oil change interval in the wife's CLK is 13k miles. Longest I have seen. I'll probably due what Benz recommends on both the E and the Clk.

It makes pretty good sense and sound logical. If I did oil change myself, will MBZ honor warrantee. For many years I've done my own oil change including some repair jobs.

I've stocked up with about 25 litres of 229.51 oil (Fuchs,Mobil 1) and several Mann filters and every 5K miles I'll be taking my Bluetec to a local shop which charges me $20 for labor (can't do it myself anymore...hip replacement).I keep all receipts and the labels from the oil bottles and filter boxes and that should satisfy any questions.

Given that I average 10-12K miles a year another thing I like about my 5-6K mile change intervals (apart from the peace of mind) is that I can use 5W-40 in March and 5W-30 in September.

I have oil analysis done at each change. It allows me to objectively determine how the oil is doing, the air filter, and how much life is left in the oil.

Blackstone Labs; good work, quick turnaround, and voice support if you want more info than the provided written report.

1st oil change I did at 1k miles. I now follow the recommended 1yr or 10k miles. Although I don't necessarily agree with changing the oil at the 1yr mark with low miles on the oil. Of course that depends on some variables.

Was wondering myself. We used to have it done on the oil from a plane I used to own. Ran about fifty bucks but that was 10 or 12 years ago. It also helps to have a mechanic interperate the results. I am curious if the do that for you these days.

Base price is $25 which is the Standard oil test. You can add different tests to the Standard one if you would like to know more.

Thanks,

Much more reasonable than aircraft oil analysis. But then again everything in aviation is more expensive, usually by an order of magnitude.

Do they interperate the results for you?

If you are running full synthetic oil, I would stick to the 10k mile interval, but it's your money.
