Filter Removal
I wanted to change the oil filter in a 2012 E350 Sedan 3.5L. I bought a new filter from the MB dealer. I got the metal filter casing off the front of the engine. However I could not get the removable filter off from the housing. Could someone help here (maybe with a picture.

I have same engine in my ML 350.
When it comes from factory, the filter is very stiff and hard to pull off the shaft. You just have to manhandle it to get it off, pulling it down the shaft toward the narrow end. Future oil filter changes will be much easier.
Once it is off, just slide new filter up shaft until it is completely seated into cap and be sure you change the O-rings as well. The MB filter kit will include these.
If you drain the oil from bottom of the engine, be sure to remove the copper washer (on new engine this is usually stuck to the oil pan by paint & will have to pry off with a screwdriver) and replace with a new one (not included with MB oil filters).

I agree with blackbullit...it will be messy if you don't have any latex gloves, but all you need to do is to pull the filter off the housing as hard as you can.
