This forum is the best, I created an account just so I could thank you guys. My gas latch wouldn't shut properly, I was going to take it to my dealer, but then I went on this forum. The gas cap has a cable attached to it, it moves freely from the 5 o'clock position to the 9 o'clock position. My latch wouldn't shut because it was in the 5 o'clock position, I just slid it over to the 9 o'clock position and it was like magic....CLOSED!!!
Pretty weak design, but now that I know what to look for, its an easy fix. Thanks guys.

Thank you! I couldn't get the door closed and I thought it was going to be a major issue. I read this thread, untangled the cord, and problem solved!!! That was easy! Thanks much

I have recently been having the same issue with the flap not locking. I read the thread and fixed it in 30 seconds saving me a trip to the garage.
Thanks for the help - saved me time and no doubt money.

First was the WTF? the filler door's not closing? Quick check on the forum, one twist of the cord, works perfectly now.
Begs the original question of WTF? One twist in the cord and the door won't close properly? At least I am now forewarned for the future. I would have felt silly bringing this to the dealer for this issue.

Once I was having trouble closing the fuel boor and Nothing i do could fix it. I was getting frustrated but realized that the car was accidentally locked
. One would think that we should be able to close the fuel regardless.

2011 E63 gas cap cover wont close. Dealer states it's a gas cover coil malfunction and quoted me 600.00 to fix. Appreciate any advice you may offer.

Like the cap itself, or the door? A "coil" malfunction sounds like maybe the "threads" on the tank are stripped, in which case you might have to bite the bullet and get it replaced. But if it's just a matter of the cap being stripped, you can replace it for like $30.Originally Posted by jmontes1214

I appreciate your advise. It's the gas door that has a magnetic function. The magnet doesn't appear to be activating and keeping the door closed. Dealer states it's a spring or hinge that activates the magnet that requires replacement. Replacement quoted at $600 😬🤔😒Originally Posted by blegthbloo

Here are the parts for tank flap. Dealer seems to be referring to elector (410 in diagram) if so part is less than $10.Originally Posted by jmontes1214

My gas door didn't latch. I took it to the dealer, as I have the extended limited warranty only to find out that it wasn't covered.
I couldn't figure out why it wasn't covered, as my contract clearly says that only normal wear and tear isn't covered - but that is a different story.
The dealer said it would cost $450 to fix. Although they gave me the part number which was only $82. I refused.
Thanks to this forum members, I tried to see if it was the gas cap cord that prevented if from latching and... it was. I demonstrated how I "fixed" it to the service manager, and man, was his face red!
Basically I would have paid $450 for the thing that is not even broken.
Thanks everyone!

Awesome.
Thanks to Live Oak for starting this thread and telemakhos for first posting the correct answer.
This _never_ happened on my C class. When I bought my "new to me" E550, I couldn't get the door to close all the way. Yup, moving the cord "down" solved it for me too

I had this happen about 3 weeks ago, thanks to this thread I got it closed at the time but it happened again.
Dealer replaced the latch mechanism under my MB ELW no questions asked.

2014 W212 Wagon. It is hanging out there almost fully open. It is not the cord. It seems where the fuel door connects to the body it's loose. Any idea how to access the door hinge on a wagon? I have it taped shut now And it looks terrible.
thanks for any help. Again it's not the cord position that wraps around the gas cap.

May be lock 420 or ejector 410, should be covered under warranty.Originally Posted by nealf2002

I had this problem in 2011 or so on an earlier W212. The information is from my response on 04/07/12, #2 in this thread.
With the door open look at about 7 or 8 o'clock there is a spring loaded piston covered with a rubber boot. It's about 5/8" in diameter with the boot. (#410 on the illustration) Push it in and release it until it sticks out. Close and push the gas filler door in the same area and see if it latches. It happened to me a couple of times when the car was a few months old and hasn't happened since.
You may have to repeat the pushing of the piston a few times before it works freely.

The issue for me was exactly what Ned wrote. It was the cord that holds the gas cap. It was getting in the way of the fuel door hinge, just ensure it's pushed down as you close the door.Originally Posted by ngerstman

Thanks again Ned!
