The car isn't fully broken-in yet so I expect that the mpg will slightly increase when I get to 2000 miles on the clock.
Sorry to bust your bubble but if you are talking about 26+mpg in your E550 as an average then you are completely wrong.
You mpg readout is not like your speedometer, gas gauge, etc... its just a guesstimate.
You have never averaged 31+mpg in your E550 and you never will.
If you actually think that you can get 30+mpg then I dare you to plan a 600mi trip with a full 20g tank without stopping for gas... Good luck!

Thank you for your comment, but my bubble is quite intact. My 2011 E550 had an overall average of 23.9 mpg for all of my driving (75% interstate, 25% suburban) This was last measured from gas fillings against the odometer readings for more than 10,000 miles. The 2013 E550 is running an average of 26.7 overall based on my normal driving patterns on two fill ups. I drive at the speed limit and do not drive 80-90 mph as I've seen some others post. The DI engines mpg have an improvement of around 20% from all that I've read so my readings seem to be consistent. The 31+ reading was off of the readout after a 100 mile trip not a gas tank fill, but the highway mpg indicated on the same run for my 2011 E550 was 26+. I'm just posting my observations as to the differences between the two cars. The 2011 E550 was a luxury trim and the 2013 E550 is a sport trim 4Matic. There have been a number of other efficiency improvement in the 2013 model such as electric steering, 7G transmission improvements, etc. which contribute to better fuel economy.

Hype: The tank on my Bluetec is 21.5 gallons. I would have no problem doing the 600 mile challenge presented above.

I have driven the 2011 E550 from Wake county in NC to Westchester county in NY (558 miles) consuming 19 gallons of gas (I don't let the tank go to empty so there was a fillup in the middle and the endpoint). My calculations yielded an actual mpg of 29.3 while the MFD readout showed 30.9 (5% overage).

Only MBs - the best or nothing
No one questions BT's ability to deliver mpgs. That's why people go for it in the first place.

Just like no one questions DI's ability to deliver upto MB's claim of 20-25% better fuel economy for identical type of driving.

What is in question here is a stated claim of W212 DI V8 E550 to deliver 31 mpg highway and 26 mpg suburb(?) when MB states only 26 and 16("city") respectively, and non-DI W212 E550 26 highway and 21 suburb(?) while MB stated, if I recall correctly, only 22 and 16 respectively. Obviously noone know what MB means by "city" (Manhattan, LA, etc.) or what "suburb" is above. But let me assure you that E550s get nowhere close to 16mpgs in NYC bumper to bumper traffic or LA or Miami or others alike. What is interesting is that MB's stated "city" cycle is identical at 16mpgs for both engines. Is it a typo on MB part?

And oh ya hype, our tanks are 21.1 gallons.

The window sticker on my 2011 E550 stated 15 City, 23 HWY. It also stated the following for City MPG: Expected range for most drivers 12 to 18MPG. HWY stated the following: Expected range for most drivers 19 to 27MPG.

2013 sticker states: City 16MPG, Hwy:26

Combined Fuel Economy on 2011: 18
Combined Fuel Economy on 2013: 20

Which confirms once again that agressive driving in "S" will yeld a significantly less mpgs than "easy going" in "E"/"C". Personally, mpgs is the last thing on my creteria list when choosing a car.

totally agree.....I'm usually in S mode and usually get 21-24 mpg.....
the S mode helps with the lag slightly

Yes, when gas light turns on, there's still about 3 gallons or so left in "reserve".

+1. "Slightly" is for E550 (like it needs much help), but for E350 "S" helps significantly, but at mpg cost.

I was just posting my observations of the difference between the 2011 E550 and the 2013 E550. I thoroughly enjoy my vehicle (this is the second E550 that I've owned) and mpg is NOT my motivation for owning one.

Getting 20.2 mpg combined (mostly surburban driving) on a 2011 E350 4Matic and upwards of 26.5 mpg on the freeway (typically at 70-75 mph). My 2012 CLS550 4Matic is getting 23.3 mpg combined (same drive cycle) and upwards of 27 mpg on the freeway. Both still better than 12 mpg on my 600 irrespective of highway or urban driving. ;-P
