"HOLD" function...NOT!!!
Okay, as my sig denotes, I own a 2012 E350 4Matic. Never gave any thought to this, but I can't seem to get the simple "HOLD" function to work when pressing the brake @ a stop (hasn't worked once since driving it off the sales lot). I guess in all the excitement of purchasing this beautiful vehicle, I simply dismissed it as "...maybe it's not a feature w/ the 2012 MY...", but after reviewing the owner's manual (and following the instructions to a tee) and calling mbrace while in the car (again w/ no success), it just doesn't work. So has anyone else out there w/ a 2012 (or possibly other MYs) experience any problems w/ the "HOLD" brake feature? Any input/help would be greatly appreciated!

Once you are at a complete stop, press the brake pedal hard, not necessarily fast, just hard. A "HOLD" indicator will come on in the instrument cluster.
It requires a little technique, but if this doesn't work take it in for repair. It's a nice feature.
Regards,
Don

like what don said, no need fast. but in my experience, no need that hard neither. at a complete stop, press the brake pedal as usual then press in a little further. if you still have problems after numerous times, you might want to take it to the dealer. could be some problems.

"HOLD" can be triggered on flat / downhill situation.
If you are stopped at an incline .. your car automatically engages hill-hold.

I have a 2012 E350. I use the Hold function all the time, and I enjoy this function very much.
To engage it, without better words...
- Let's say my car is at a full stop on a flat road, and my right foot is on the brake pedal.
- The brake pedal should be at, just as an example here, about 3/10 of its travel.
- Without releasing my right foot; I then 'jab' my right foot down with a quick motion to depress the brake pedal further, from its 3/10 to 8/10.
- At this moment, the hold function should be engaged automatically, and the word 'Hold' should be displayed on the dash.
- Then, if I release my foot from the brake pedal, the car should be in Hold mode.
Try to find a clear and safe flat road to practice it a little. It might take a few practices to get it. Once we get it, it would become natural.
Hope it helps,
With best regards,

Hold function has been around for some years, my 2004 W211 has it and still works. If u can't get it to work, it is better take it to a dealer... either have them show u or get it fixed. It's a bit like riding bicycles, hard to explain via words, but yeah, what people have said above.

An important distinction is being made here.
It's true that the hill hold feature will engage automatically with the driver doing nothing, but unless you deliberately set it by firmly depressing the brake and causing the HOLD light in the display to come on, when you remove your foot from the brake the function will disengage after a very short period designed to allow you to get your foot from the brake to the accelerator without coasting backwards.
With the hold function deliberately actuated by the driver, the car will remain stationary indefinitely, until you depress the accelerator.
MB refers to these two operations separately. The short, automatically engaged hold function is called "Hill Start Assist," while the deliberately driver-actuated permanent hold function is in fact called "Hold Function."

Another poster, I think K-A, says that his car automatically went into P after a longish time of having the hold function activated.

Geez, by that time the guy behind you on the hill may have worn his battery down blowing the horn - or may have shot you.

I use the hold function at stoplights when I want a very quick getaway. It is awesome, and the car seems to start in 1st even without the Sport mode. It would be embarrassing though if the car went into park and I was sitting there revving my engine!

It worked!!! Thanks for EVERYONE'S input...it really helped! Especially axhoaxho, chrisvr6, and hyperion667 for the "quick jab" reference... So my last ditch effort before hauling the E to the dealer, I thought to myself, "hmm...didn't really try the quick jab approach"; was really only pressing "long and hard". So, just went out and "jabbed" just a bit, keeping axhoaxho's "3/10 to 8/10" in mind, and got it to work and now I get it everytime! REALLY nifty feature! The advantages of forum membership! Who needs mbrace??? What can I say, you guys are AWESOME!!! Wifey's gonna love this! (did I get enough of them in?!! lol)
EDIT: was thinking M-B should include this as one of their training videos on their site! But, then again, seems I'm the only goofball that wasn't able to figure it out... --thanks again fellas!
