Bluetec Owners: Most & Average miles per tank?

I still haven't gone through my first tank of fuel yet, I'm at about 430 miles right now and have 1/4 tank left but honestly I'm not even sure if it was 100% full when I picked up the car. If it was, then I'm looking at ~575 miles out of a tank but I'd love to squeeze out more, it's sort of a challenger.

I'm in the habit of usually filling up every time I fuel up and driving until the range indicator shows 0 miles left.

How much do you guys get on average out of a tank (how many gallons?) and what's the most you've ever gotten?

It is a very poor practice to let the tank run that close to empty. All tanks, gas or diesel accumulate some crud on the bottom of the fuel which sits above the fuel pump pick up. When the tank is that empty, the crud gets mixed into the fuel more easily and you start to pump crud...yes the filters get rid or it, but it's just a poor habit.

I get about 36 mpg on my 2011 e350 on interstates driving at 75/80 in Florida...with 5000 miles on the car. It probably would be better if I drove a little slower, but the car is so quiet and smooth, it's hard to only go 65/70.

I am getting about 450-475 on a tank but it's 100% city driving.

Greatest miles was 550 on one tank
Greatest gallons was 19.1 filled
Greatest MPG on one tank was 33.9

Average MPG is over 30, combination city and highway

Look, if I can get 30 combined out of a 4000 pound luxury vehicle that is a blast to drive, I can not be anything but thrilled.

I fill up at a 3/4 and usually get 200+ per 1/4 but I'm 60% highway

I believe I am close to your figures. I'll say I have no problem getting over 700 miles per tank on high way driving. If I took a chance, I'll most likely get close 800 miles per tank.

The tank holds 23.5 gallons, so to reach 800 miles you would need to get right around 35 MPG (and have about 3/4 of a gallon left in the tank). I think it would be possible on a long road trip all highway.

Im looking forward to doing a Vegas trip from Phoenix this summer and taking the Bluetec...it's 554 miles roundtrip, should easily be doable without having to fuel up at all the whole trip. Phoenix to LA would be harder at 772 miles roundtrip...probably doable but you'd need some gas while in LA so a bit of fuel would be needed.

I thought the tank held 21.1 gallons. However, everything I've read makes reference to a reserve amount. Is it,by chance,21.1 total or 21.1 plus an added reserve?

The best *potential* result I've gotten was over 800 miles for a tankful.Last January,on a long stretch of I-95,I got 38mpg on winter diesel. On summer diesel I suspect that would have been closer to 40mpg which, with a 21 gallon tank, would make 800+ miles. If the tank is 23 gallons (as was suggested above) then that's closer to 900.Of course you'd be riding on fumes at that point but sometimes it's fun to take chances.

Strange thing with this diesel, is that even with 3 other passengers, it still hits 35+ on the highway at 70-75mph, it really is locomotive-like.

21.1 gallons plus 2.4 gallons reserve. Just got done reading the manual the other night.

The fuel light comes on when you reach the reserve, so when your fuel light comes on, you have 2.4 gallons of fuel left.

My fuel light was on today, and it took 18.5 gallons, which is remarkably similar to 21.1 less 2.4 gallons (18.7 gallons).

The guess-o-meter said I had only 20 miles to go.

Hmm, maybe I misunderstood it then? I guess the total capacity could be 21.1 gallons and then 2.4 gallons of that are for reserve? Just doesn't seem logical to build a gas tank that holds an odd number like that, but then again it does make sense in liters. The fact that it added up to a more rounded off number like 23.5 must of just been a coincidence as the AMG model adds up to 21.1 which wouldn't make sense.

I also filled up today and put in 19.3 gallons, my fuel light came on a couple days ago (didn't note the mileage) but today on the way to the gas station, when I checked the guess-o-meter, it just had a picture of the car and a red fuel pump next to it, which accroding to the manual means "Get your *** to a gas station ASAP!"

BTW, I got 480 miles out of 19.3 gallons....I think. Reason I'm not 100% sure is because I don't know if it had a full tank in there to start out. This first full tank that I filled up will be the real test.

I believe that means that the tank is 21.1 gallons total, and that the gas light comes on when there is only 2.4 gallons left.

That fits in with my findings; I have had the light on before and put in 19.2 max.

I take that capacity to mean that there is a TOTAL of 21.1 gallons capacity in the tank, and that the reserve light comes on when you have only 2.4g left.

Also, if you're all city, 480 is ok but a little on the low side for 19.3 gallons. I tend to believe that the tank wasn't full.

My combination city/highway mix nets me almost 600 miles out of 19.3.

Damn 600 would be nice, that is actually my goal. I was also surprised by the 480 and actually thought I still had a couple gallons left but then got the super low warning and had to go fill up. There was some highway driving in there as well, I'd say 60% city and 40% hwy.

One thing I've read about is that the diesel MPG will improve as the engine breaks in a bit, so far it only has 480 miles on it so it's very very new.

I've been able to hit 600 with probably 85% highway but generally fill up at 550-575 before the light comes on.

My fuel gauge seems to not be configured right though. At 3/4 I will only travel 100-115 miles, by 1/2 I am close to 300 and it seems to do most its work between 1/2-1/4 where I end up at 1/4 with 500 miles on it. I am debating bringing it up at my 10k service in a few weeks. Would like it to be more accurate but I am used to it now and I don't want to risk them screwing something else up trying to fix it?

Best tank has been 607 miles on 17.43 gallons according to fuelly for 34.8mpg and I believe that was the tail end of winter diesel as it was end of March. I generally try coast to stops as much as possible but I always run my AC compressor and definitely punch the accelerator now and again and highway is usually 65-75mph...

Reading threads like these always annoys me how the EPA seems to understate diesel and overstate gasonline MPG. 2012 BTC is rated 32mpg HWY, seems like most around here can get 32mpg 70% HWY...

Through two fill ups now, I've averaged 24.4 MPG with approx. 65% city driving and 35% highway. EPA ratings are 21 city/32 hwy 25 combined, so we are about in line with that, but actually a little lower...but seems way lower than what other Bluetec owners are reporting.

I'm hoping it improves as the engine continues to break in, I was really expecting in the 28-29 MPG range combined.

How are you guys getting so high?

After 3mths, I'm getting about 650kms (390 miles). This is combined city/hwy in Toronto.

Is it my driving? Or my car? Any ideas?

35.6 miles to a gallon of diesel on 350 miles trip from Lake Forest, CA to Santa Barbara and back with 3 persons aboard, air conditioner on 40% of the time, 25% city driving.

There is nothing wrong with your driving. I'm getting almost the in NYC. It's a lot better when I go outside of NY Metro area.
