Hi guys! New owner of an 09 w212 e class here, my first benz.

When I got the car (used), I quickly realized that the CD is not working, when you load a CD, DVD, mp3 CD even an original audio CD, it says: "DEVICE UNAVAILABLE" (but there is sound if you play FM radio)

I brought the car to the dealer and he was quoting me to change the whole HU. I said why don't we try to update the software first? He says no such thing as "update the software" [WTF?]

I have the 14 speaker Harman Kardon package so its such a shame if I don't get to maximize it. I am planning to buy myself an ipod connector first and see if it works.

But I'm quite irritated with the dealer since I know (as I've been reading and searching the forums) that they can update the COMAND software. My car is pretty old for a w212 and the screen doesn't even have the "tabs", so I know the software is pretty old.

Any advice? Can't I update on my own?

I have not seen any car system in the past six years or so that isn't field upgradeable if it has software.....but my guess is that you have a CD hardware problem and software won't fix it...it's not an uncommon problem with CD players whether in car, in your computer or elsewhere. However, you should be able to use any external device connected to the sound system with no problems.

If your car is a 2009 you are on the wrong forum. Your car is a W211 and you may get answers on that forum.

They say that the software can't connect? is this valid? (this is an audio 20 with single CD) I have ordered an ipod connector though, so hopefully this works and I can just bypass the CD..

There are a number of forums/boards on the internet for mercedes that are more technical and deal with "older" cars. I'd suggest you try your question on one of those. I can't address an audio 20...I have no idea what it even is.

I think Audio 20 may be a 'lesser' audio system available in other markets. Most North American W212s are sold with the HK system.

If your car is 2009 W212 it is not a North American spec car. Is the car in the US?
