E350CDI 265hp vs 231hp differences
So I've been doing a bit of research with conflicting results. Wikipedia would suggest it's the exact same engine; OM642, but with different software. Other sites say it's a completely new engine!
Can anyone help or direct me to a thread/site that could?

Depending on market and application, the OM642 has produced anywhere from 180-265 HP. The market matters because of emissions requirements, the application matters because of type of vehicle or what it is sold as. The latest 265HP versions have a new, twin scroll turbo. I'm assuming that when it's used with the proper engine management software it accounts for the differences. I'd love to get that turbo on my 211 Bluetec, but I imagine it would be a nightmare for engine software.

- different injection (2000bar vs 1800bar of the 231hp version or 1600bar for the 224hp)
- new turbo (roll bearing version)
- better heat exchanger for EGR and oil
- better air intake admission with new air filter boxes and intake channel
- some new internals
etc...

Ahhhh ok, so it's the same basic engine, but different bolt on. I suppose the next question is; is there a very notable difference? Is in, should a pay substantially more for a 265hp over a 231?

What prices are they offering? Have you considered the 250CDI? There is not that much difference in power between the 350 and the 250.

An E250CDI can be had for around $90k driveaway (list price $110k no options) but you would be lucky to get an E350CDI for less than $130k.

Well, I think what made you think is some pre 2012 models for E250 CDI / CGI came with 5 speed tranny and these cars had floor shifter not direct lever gear selector as all the E350 and up models come with
Column shifter is the best and MB should use these in all the models , easy to use and you can have extra space to put your stuff in as well

I think the point is they are doing pretty massive discounts on new E classes in Australia right now, so you could get a brand new E250 CDI for the price of a second hand 350CDI or less, without losing much in performance or luxury. The 250CDI has a 7speed box, identical interior, does 0-100kmh in 7.5 and gets stupidly good fuel economy. Hell I saw a new E200 or 220, (whatever the base model was) advertised for under $70k drive away.

Im sure there are discounts on the 350, but the OP is looking for a second hand car, Im guessing if he is looking at older 350s he is looking at spending well under $100k and even with a discount a 350 would still be well over $120k for the diesel. In Australia Id hazard a guess that the 250 outsells the 350 by a long margin.

Do you have a link for said E250cdi? I had a look on carsales and they're all over 90k for decent ones.
The vehicle l'm looking at is a possible trade for my C63. It's a 2010 E350 CDI full optioned, including the AMG pack. It'll work out to be about $70k.

You aren't going to get one cheaper than that, and 70k for a 350cdi seems like a pretty good deal. Remember with a 2010 you'll miss out on the comand 4.5 though. The 2010 250CDI arent really a match for the 350s because they came with the old 5 speed, unlike the MY12 models.

Well yeah, 90k is the price I mentioned. I think the range goes from high 80's for a stripped out 250 through to 90+ for one with vision pack. Pretty massive discounts considering the RRP driveaway for an E250 with vision pack is just under $120k.
