I recently purchased a 2012 E350 4Matic that is nicely equipped except for the lack of an integrated backup camera. I am used to having a backup camera so I am thinking about having one installed. From what I understand my vehicle has a COMAND 4.5 system. I am not electronically literate so don't know if I can use the same components as work with earlier versions of COMAND or not. From what I understand MB does not offer an integrated backup camera kit per se but most if not all of the components can be purchased through MB, but at a cost! From various posts I have seen that Mid City offers a complete kit for about $590 including shipping and Emerald offers a kit for $544. Are these kits comparable or is one preferred to the other? The Emerald kit appears to be a bit more sophisticated than the Mid City kit but the installation instructions for the Mid City kit appear to be much better. The other option is to buy components from other sources such as eBay but how does one know that they will work together and with the COMAND system? Any comments and suggestions would be most appreciated.
A local installer offered another alternative - at a better price. He installed a NAV TV W204-N RVC (NTV-Kit704) interface and a MTV TV Camera 6. It took about 3 hours to install. So far it works great - curved lines and all. He charged me the same price in $CDN and $US even though the current exchange rate is approx. $0.70 = $CDN 1! That was quite a bit cheaper than either a Mid City or Emerald system after currency conversion.
After reading all these posts I ordered the cables, camera and modulator and took the car to the local distributor to have the components installed.
After a week I have a reverse camera working perfectly.
I said nothing about the problem with the plug in the comand side, this discovered by its own.
Probably one of you will ask why I bought the parts and then took the car to MB Service to have it installed....the reason is that part here in Chile where I live are much much more expensive than in the US or Europe.
Thank You again for the advises, part numbers, etc.
Rafael
My car is 2013 but didn't arrive with a reverse camera so the MB dealer installed locally here in Israel the camera but it does not have the lines that move and indicate the parking space, can it be added to my camera ?
Finally I have found a solution.
Reading some forums I have found this solution:
It seems that mercedes use the same Modulator and camera for couple of here models:
W212 E class / W207 E class coupe / W204 C class.
So i bought on ebay for my car W212 E class:
Modulator : A2128270006 (for W212)
Camera: A2078200897 (for W207)
Camera to Modulator wiring harness: A2044404808 (W204)
Modulator to comand wiring harness: A2044404908 (W204)
The wiring are for a C-klass. The wiring from the camera to the modulator will work.
The second wiring A2044404908 from the modulator to comand will not feet properly.
the connector to the SAM could be not the same. the reverse light connector also could be not the same.
For that reason I have bought a Add-a-fuse to connect to SAM without cutting any cable.
and I bought a Scotchlocks to connect to reverse light without cutting the reverse light cable.
I still did not receive the cables yet. I will put some pictures of the installation.
This DIY/info is the same for W212 facelift with comand online 4.7?
Hello can you please tell me where to get the parts I want to do the same
Thx

This is the parts I bought:
Backup camera
Part number: A2128201897
Modulator
Part number: A2128270006
Cables
i didn't find on the net the exact model for W212, so I took the one for W164, it is the same if I'm not wrong
as you see in the picture of the cables there is:
- white cable will connect the camera to the Modulator
- The black cable has many connectors:
- The white connector with black and white wires will be connected to the Modulator.
- Fakra cable will go to the comand unit.
- There is Three remaining wires:
- Black, Brown, Red
I think that the white should be connected to the reverse light ?
The red will be connected to the + (SUM), where in the sum should be connected ?
The Brown will be connected to the ground ?
Can anyone could help to confirm this installation ?
I have already activated the backup view mode in the engineering menu
Thank you
Hi guys, I am a little late the party but I have to install reverse camera on my e 250 coupe C207 for my wife. I figured out reverse cam settings in engineering mode but when i put car in reverse gear nothing happens (note I don't have cam installed yet). I read on forums that in reverse gear screen should turn blank with message.
So I have two questions
1. Am I missing any settings for reverse cam? I can see in setting 'act8vate with R gear' is checked
2. I see there is a spare green fakra plug, what's that for? Is my car pre wired for reverse cam?
Did you manage to get anywhere? (The Eng mode > 7.7 Reverse Cam settings > power cycle > reverse should bring up the reverse cam screen (even wo the camera attached).
Where to connect the reversing signal on W212 Facelift?
I'm also installing an aftermarket reversing camera. I got everything installed and connected and configured the Command system (as per previous post)
But from where do you guys take the 12V power from, for the camera? I wanted to tap the power from the reversing light so that the camera would get power only when the car is in reverse. But that doesn't work. I found that the power going to the LED reverse light is not 12 VDC when the engine is running. It goes down to 4V DC, but with a 15V AC at 400Hz.
It has a nice and steady 12VDC when engine is NOT running (and gear in reverse). So everything works as it should when gear is in reverse and engine not running.
I then thought I might be able to tap the reversing light output (pin 8) for the 13-pole trailer connector which is controlled by the "Anhängeranschlussgerät" 5DS 009 781-03, but for some reason no voltage can be measured on the output when car is in reverse?
Do I need a modulator like for the pre-facelift W212 or any other ideas?
Any installation instruction or shared experience would be highly appreciated.
