Why no audible when I lock the car?
My '08 use to emit three beeps when I locked it with my fob. I just replaced the car with a beautiful 2012 CPO with keyless and other options. But it doesn't make a "peep" when I lock it or unlock it with the fob. Is that the way it should be?
PS: I attached a pic. AND I LOVE THE CAR.

If the 12 is anything like the 11, then be thankful, because they opted to do away with the nicer sounding piezo "beep" for an obnoxious and cheap "honk" using the factory horn.

My car doesn't beep when locked either. I have never changed a setting. I prefer it this anyway - as was said before, the honk sounds cheap and kind of dorky. I can see the lights flash, that's enough.
My W210 didn't beep either. C250 loaner I had last week honked when locked.

There is a setting that you can activate I think from the display behind the steering, my 2013 used to silently lock, I missed the beep so I've set it to beep. Reassuring sound when I walk away from it.

I changed my car's audible settings (2012) via the center counsel (use your left steering wheel controls and click the side arrow until you get to settings) when I clicked to "settings" then "Vehicle" then "enable car audible door settings".
No beeps just clicks and horn.
Also, I like the setting when I leave the car the seats move backwards and when I get in the car the seat moves back to the last settings. Do not much like the seat belt auto tighteners. You can disable that setting too.

MBUSA in their quest to diminish the class and sophisticated dignity once at the forefront of Mercedes, have cost cut their alarm system to sound like a 2005 Chevy Cobalt Rental Car when arming or disarming. My 2010 E had the sophisticated "chirp" and I was horrified when my 2011 raunchily and nerdily honked like a.... well, Rental Car I'd get often.
I wrote "MB Advisors" and told them I found it to be unacceptable for a brand who calls themselves "luxury" as an auditory tone when approaching your vehicle is a very telling sense that can convey and evoke a lot, and they said "we're aware that this is a customer issue and are working on resolving it". This was over 2 years ago.
BTW, your W212 is stunning. Man I love the pre-facelift at that angle, just hardcore in all the right ways. How do you like it compared to your W211? I find myself missing my W211 even more these days and admire that bodystyle on the roads more and more. A truly timeless design.

I easily found the setting to enable a brief honk when I lock the doors. Its a real sort touch of the horn, barely heard over the din of ambient sound of the street. not too bad.
Thanks KA for the complement. yeah the dark silver body with the black roof of the Pano looks great. I do like my 2012 better because its loaded with options like P2, Pano, lane assist, blind spot assist, dynamic vented seats, wood sport steering wheel, spoiler, AMG wheels etc. best of all 34 more hp! that being said, I agree that the w211 was and is a CLASSIC design that doesn't get old. Also the new gen Command/Nav is a big improvement over the w211 gen nav. I will always have a soft spot for the w211 that I traded away. After all, it was my first MB!

Ahh, the W211 was kind of my "initiation" to M-B land as well. Well... it was a W220 S but that was a very short experience.
Yeah, the W212's fundamental improvements will make you happy for a long time. The W211 unfortunately felt a little soft for a Mercedes and the W212 will feel like a tank in comparison.
I was doing a BMW drive event, going from a 640i Gran Coupe all Optioned out to a Porsche Panamera, got to drive them alone and how I wanted. I at one point was coming up behind a white '09-ish W211 with a Pano roof and the rare-to-W211 AMG Sport Package. I must have been the only guy in a 640i Grane Coupe or Panamera that was spending most of my drive fixated on admired/drooling over a W211 and its perfectly timeless and still gorgeous backend.

I don't know about the others. But, when I enabled the locking audible, the result was a VERY quick triggering on the horn. It almost doesnt spool up enough to blow it. To me its really not enough of a horn to be offensive. Its just enough to hear it only if your listening for it. You can barely notice it if you are more than 20 ft away.

Even if it's not startling, it sounds dorky as hell. I remember once unlocking my car to a dopey triple "broken horn" honk then the girl next to me in a Prius or something with a sophisticated double electro beep. It was the only time I was envious of a Prius.

My car is always on silent locking mode. I know it's locked when my mirrors automatically fold and my lights flash twice.
In the end, who gives a crap, as long as the car is locked. Do you actually think people look at these cars. My plumber drives a BMW and he told me he is thinking of upgrading to a Mercedes.

yes, mine is off, but not because of the horn, just for attracting less attention, and because any sound is kind of dumb lol

My 2011's was off too. So it didn't bug me either by that time. However, that was the ONLY car who's alarm I've ever turned off as it was the only one I've had that had a "honk alarm" and I'd wager that lots of people are the same way in that they've never de-sounded a electronic beep.
Either way, doesn't have to be a deal breaker or anything, but I think everybody should agree that a Mercedes-Benz deserves an audible option that is of some sophistication.
What bothers me is that "MB Advisors" told me in late 2010 that they were working on "fixing" it because they acknowledged "we are aware that this is a customer issue" i.e "have gotten negative feedback" and to this day haven't. Should be such a simple thing to fix if it's offensive to enough buyers who've complained about it.

the 2014 model gives one a choice..a brief and softer honk or silent..it can be enabled by the steering wheel controls..I have mine on silent and just watch the lights to confirm its locked
