window tint / issues getting pulled over

the E350 I picked up on sat came fully tinted, which I think looks awesome but I have never had my front windows tinted before only the back. its not super dark but its def not light either. pretty much if you are looking directly in you can see people but looking at an angle you can not. I am not familiar with tint levels so I cant really guess on the number or however they measure them.

do you get pulled over for your windows? I live in a suburb of east lansing. I think in the city they have better things to do but I know the cops out where I live dont do anything and always see them just sitting in various parking lots. my old boss said something about getting ready to get pulled over this morning and it got me thinking.

It really depends on the area where you are living at. I live in SoCal and the cops in my area don't really care much about it. I had my car for a year and a half now and only got pulled over a month ago, and he didn't even write me a fix-it ticket or anything else. Just gave me a warning. However, you shouldn't expect that you will never get pulled over for it.

I know that a fix-it ticket costs around 20 dollars for me, and if I get one I will just take it off and put it back on for 70 dollars. Can't live without tint around here.. get's so hot during the summer.

Car dealers (new and used) cannot legally sell a car unless it complies with all of the safety rules.

Drive by a tint shop and ask them to measure your tint. They have a light meter that fits over your side windows and measures VLT (visible light transmission) in a few moments.

You can then check to see if that complies with your state laws. If not, then you need to decide if the tint is worth risking a ticket.

If it does not comply and you bought the car from a car lot then they have to make it right at no charge to you. Make sure that the rear defroster still works after they removed the tint.

cool, thanks guys

is there any process you can go through with your eye doctor to legally have tinted windows? (my fiance works at an optometrists office)

Just my 2 cents, have the front tint removed. If the tint on the side windows is 35% or so then they may not bother you. Follow the advice of the others, it is sound.
