Adaptive Lighting Noise?
Have a 2014 E350, w/750 miles; with the adaptive lighting system. Upon shut off a whine emits from both headlights for about 15 to 30sec. +-. then quits. the noise will restart upon opening any door. The noise can be stopped by locking the car with the MB key fob. Very annoying.
Dealer indicates this is normal with this headlight system!
Are there fans in the headlights cooling the LED's? or a electronic "can" needing cooling?
thoughts please.
thanks

From the WIS:
Thermal management
The front lamp units are each equipped with a temperature sensor for each light function, with which the heat development in the area of the actuated LEDs is recorded. The front LED exterior lights actuation modules evaluate the signals of two temperature sensors each. If the LEDs or the plastic housing of the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the front LED exterior lights actuation modules reduce the actuation currents for the LEDs and thereby lower the heat development.
Apart from this, the front LED exterior lights actuation modules actuate the following components to additionally cool the LEDs or plastic housing of the front lamp units:
The actuation depends on which light function is active.
The active ventilation by means of actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.
So to answer your question, yes there are fans in the LED headlights and yes, they will turn on in either too hot or too cold temperatures.

Interesting. My E250 seems almost alive when I walk up to it/away from it in the garage. Once it "sees" me (keyless entry) there is always some noise (fans, etc) coming from it.

Yeah, it can be alarming at first but basically the car is just trying to get ready for you to push the start button. It will prime the fuel pump and get ready to melt the possible ice in cold temperatures or ventilate in hot temperatures.
When you get out of the car the same story goes for circulating some oil around so it wouldn't bake and allow things to cool off properly.
The only time it can be annoying is when all you went out to get was the memory card and you weren't expecting to go on a drive, however your car can't read your mind. Not yet...
