It's actually a bit bigger deal than that. Cars with the top fuel cap are essentially FlexFuel vehicles (FFV) while the ones with the bottom are not. Some cars come with build option code 929 - ENGINE FOR ETHANOL FUEL while others don't. I was wondering what was the differentiating factor but so far I have found none.

Thanks for the note! I actually called MBUSA and it turns out this is a no-charge option but unless you request it you won't get it. So maybe people who have yet to order can learn and get one FlexFuel ready. I don't think there is any negative having a FlexFuel ready E-class. The MBUSA website says it's available on the Cabriolet and the Coupe but it is clearly available on the Sedan too as I got a loaner with the above fuel cap.

Based on the small sample who responded most people don't have a FlexFuel ready E350 and they don't even know it was an option, myself included. Had I not gotten a loaner with the weird fuel cap I would not have known either.

I'd also note that with the FlexFuel E350 I could see the ethanol percentage as an ODB2 value and it was around 6%. That value bank is not available to read with the regular E350.
