Tire rotaional noise?
First of all - I appreciate all members contributions to this forum - very informative to me.
My new E350 (2,100 mile) is great, very enjoyable to drive and looking forward to another cross country trip in it; and, the forum answered my earlier question on the headlight fan noise (CAN fans).
But, at around 60mph or so, it seems like there is a slight rotational noise - but not a thumping noise from the rear area, noise dissipates at higher speed, not apparent at lower and nothing in the steering wheel. Tires have been expertly balanced twice. So, perhaps - with the reclining rear seats, there is more noise apparent from the back seat area than I am used to coming off LS series cars. The noise is not loud. Perhaps it is the tires? This is not the sport MB.
thank you,

But I found where the problem for a big part of it most likely is. If you pull out the side bolsters of the rear seat you will see bare painted metal surface of the rear wheel well. I could not believe this first when I saw it.
I will get some sound deadening material and see if this can be helped.
Another source for noise is the resonating plastic bottom of the trunk under the spare tire. It is very difficult to understand MB engineering for making it the way it is made. Almost makes me think they made this car noisy on purpose to make it lesser quality compared to the S-class.
Something I learned Porsche did with the driveability of the Cayman as it as a center engine construction was faster than the 911 that is the selling flagship from them...

Follow Up to Rotational Tire noise!
Excellent article/illustrations on removal of the front door panels!
And also the comment that the space between the rear seat and the rear tire wheel well is not insulated.
Any thoughts on how to remove the rear seat panels to gain access to the empty space adjacent to the tire wheel? I would like to insulate this area to reduce tire noise?
thanks,

Probably the tires. My Michellins are noisier than other tires I have owned. Also, my E350 has much more tire noise than most other cars I have owned on imperfect roads. My previous Hyundai Azera was much quieter with the same Michellin tires.
