What happens if

I know this is a stupid question but what will happen if you are driving at speed and wanting to signal a lane change but somehow use the right stalk instead of the left stalk on steering wheel, and you end up neutral or park or even worse reverse gear ??? Would it cause an accident of monstrous proportions? I know it's a rare possibility but given the stalks look similar on either side of the wheel can anyone see this happening? This being an expensive car would there be a software to prevent such an accident?
( ps. I had accidentally put it in neutral once and was wondering why the car isn't accelerating before I recognized the error.... the after effects of frequent international travels).

At speed, the transmission will only shift into neutral. If this happens, simply shift back into drive.

Thanks, but at slower speeds can an accident happen? I do not want to try it but what would be a safe speed before it just shifts into neutral?

You have to literally be crawling at idle for it to shift to reverse and it warns you, and I believe I have to hold it down for a second or two to initiate reverse. Park can only be engaged with fully depressed brake pedal

Good question though

That is good to know. I was wondering the same thing, what would happen if I was trying to go into neutral and went too far.

Good question??? You guys can't be serious
Maybe you should consider ditching your drivers license!

This thread makes me understand the need for warning labels on cleaning supplies

Have you ever driven internationally ? Those who have driven once in countries where the wiper controls and signal change levers are swapped will understand this issue. Anyway what do I know?

These are not manual shift cars from the '60's. Everything is electronic and there are way too many safeguards. Did you seriously think you could shift into anything but neutral at speed?

I think the OP identified that it wasn't a very smart question.
But if you want to know more about gear selection when driving, in the IC (2011 model, I am not sure if it has changed for later models) There is an arrow indicating what gears are available. You will see that the arrow is only indicating that N is available above 5mph, and when below 5mph P and R will also be available.
