Second that... Is this a failure that is destined to affect all the engines built within the period or only some of those within the period. I am going to assume it is only a minority of the engines built during the period

since this bulletin was just issued they may not have known what it could be. I would take it back next chance you get so they can see if this applies to your car.
does this qualify?

Post back and let us know what they say.
Anytime a piston wall gets scored it's generally one of two things. Either the wrist pin bearings are worn out of spec or it's a heat issue. Heat issue causes the piston to expand beyond the clearance causing scuffing between piston and bore. Worn wrist pin bearing causes the piston to wobble in the bore which will sound like a rattle and a clatter that increases with rpm.

Got my car back last night. Complete reman engine was installed. Scary diagnosis if you see the writeup. All cylinder walls scratched and pitted ..... damn!!
It runs good. No major difference from before, engine is quieter and acceleration is a tad improved. Still waiting on "extras" from MBUSA.

Dealer is shooting for either complimentary maintenance up to CPO warranty expiration OR a "deal" on a ML350BT that is in my to-buy list in the near future.

I don't think this is a recall, only a bulletin on how to repair if condition is present. If under warranty, the it's on MB's dime. If not, then I assume the customer would have to pay for repairs.

Wise choice, to the OP! Congrats... a brand new engine is a sweet deal when you think about it.
I bet the mechanics LOVE this type of work... beats your typical b.s. that they deal with all day...
MBUSA gave me $2k towards warranty, tire/wheel, and prepaid maintenance when I get a full refund for my '550.... they really come through if you're nice to them and be patient and play the game... I'm impressed with MBUSA all around. I wrote a letter of thanks to steve cannon and he wrote me back appreciating my appreciation of the company and my accolades to the service department that took care of me.

You a a100% right. Its some sort of "warranty bulletin", my engine is within range of possibly having the issue.

After hearing again my engine,I dont think mine has a knock or a rattle, I think I only can hear the direct injection sound. But anyway I will take the car to the dealer with the bulletin, so they can certify its ok and the issue is non existent. Any other comments by the OP's ?

The 2010 E350, I have had it only since last Thursday. I am planning on keeping my C300. I assume its a direct injection noise in my E350, but maybe I am wrong. Its for sure not a clanking, rattling or knocking type of noise. I am no expert, and am open to any OP suggestions.
