headrest movement.

Just noticed on my '12 e63 that any time one of the front seats is moved forward or back that the headrest goes up!
Kept wondering why the damn headrests always seemed to be at their max height.
What an I missing here?

The car thinks that it is being smart when you move your seat back because you are "taller" so you need the headrest higher. It's a known feature in the w212s and it has been annoying.

MB has been doing this for years. I noticed this on my AMG back in 2002 and every year since.

If the car was so smart then why would it continue to go up when the seat is being moved forward!
You'd think that it would come down for a shorter passenger.

It does. If you keep moving the seat forward you will notice that it will lower the headrest.
Move the seat all the way forward and all the way back and you will see the headrest go up and down.
And yes it is VERY annoying. Please get rid of it Mercedes!!!

That explains why mine moves. I like symmetry and periodically I have to lower the passenger headrest and never understood the intermittent movement.

Now that I understand it I wish they would get rid of it.

It is a system called "NeckPro" developed by Mercedes. The system's goal is to match the best headrest height for your specific seating position to minimize the risk of whiplash during a collision.

I must agree though, it is rather annoying. Take this out and give us some power folding mirrors instead.

I think you will find that Mercedes doesn't refer to them as "headrests", rather they are "head restraints". Mercedes doesn't consider them a convenience or comfort factor, rather they are a safety device.

Don

Noticed that too. I thought they were trying to keep the headrest even with my head when I reclined. When the seat is upright, I wish the headrest would go higher - it seems to be able to extend higher above the seat when reclined.

Anyone had their headsets pop forward (like they would if you were rear-ended) but without having an accident? Mine were that way.

To be honest, I am not completely sure if it was like that when I bought it or it happened afterwards. I didn't realize they were popped forward until a week or so after I purchased it while making adjustments to the headrests. That is when I noticed that photos of other car's headrests didn't match up with mine (i.e. the black plastic back part was not flush with the sides of the leather headrest). Then I followed instructions on how the reset them using a long screwdriver and they popped back into place with some effort so they definitely had been engaged.

I went back to the photos from the dealer and the ones I took at purchase to show friends, and I didn't have a clear shot of the headrests to verify their position. Prior to noticing this, I had already taken the car to the local MB dealer for a PPI and I also had another mechanic check it over. Neither one mentioned the headrests. Both did confirm there were no signs of an accident from visual inspection. Both Carfax and Autocheck are clean.

After I popped them back into place, I had the car visually inspected by an auto detailer, car buyer and a mechanic to see if there was any sign of an accident. No one saw anything.

I had forgotten about it until reading this thread. Perhaps something did happen to the car to cause them to engage, but there is no evidence of it. I know if wasn't from my kids kicking the back of the seat. Is it possible for these to engage without an accident? I suppose it would take some force for that to happen.

I was rear ended in an E-350 Hertz rental car once. There was absolutely no mark on the rear bumper, but both headrests popped forward.

I tried to report it to Hertz (really) but with no damage, they were not interested in hearing about it.

My point is that very little impact can set them off. Perhaps you backed into a parking space and popped a pole or car behind you, etc...

You sound like my wife - she blamed me too.

Interesting that it didn't take much of an impact to set them off. I suppose that is a good thing. Who knows it could have happened while the car was transported to the dealer or when they were moving it around their lot. I bet they tap bumpers all the time.
