Rest feature gone in W212
Still reading the manual on my 2014 E350 4matic, and it appears the Rest or Residual function has been deleted. My 211 had it and previous MBs had it too. It was nice to run into the store/mall or house for about 30 minutes when the weather was in the teens and have the cabin toasty warm when i returned. Unless i'm missing something dont believe the feature is there????

But who was the idiot @ the MB factory who decided to delete that very useful feature, the 'tree nail' or folding grocery bag hook, from the trunk of W212-2014s ????

That's the one you use when you're in James Bond spy mode. If you're on a stake-out you clearly don't want to leave the engine running 'cause the bad guys might spot you. When you switch it off however you'll get cold. So, you switch the engine off then press the REST button and the heater system will power up and work for a while on the residual heat left in the system.
Not much good on a long stake-out as the heat will gradually go as will your battery, but OK if you've not got to hang around too long.
If you're not in the spying business it will operate just as well in Tesco's car park keeping you warm whilst the rest of the family goes and buys your supper.

Rest = Restwärme
In Europe we still have the "Restwärme" when we select as extra the Thermotronic with 3 Zones (back zone).*
It's "funny" the layout of the buttons from my car* are not the same as the pic above shared.*

I did it on W211 and the climatronic change was plug & play. Is it on W212?.
FYI not too many W211 had rest function. Only those with 4-zones and that was the climatronic I used.
All MB have coolant circulation aux pump for last 50 years, so even not likely I will need the feature for Las Vegas, I will keep an eye for such climatronic just in case.
I wonder if a scanner could activate the system?

Another useful for cold climate is electric cabin heater. I heard about it on Canadians W211 and I order one for my Ford truck.
Surprisingly it come as factory option on my Sprinter bus, who also has 250 amp alternator.
Took me 2 years with Ford till Alaskan trip when I was able to notice how nice it is to get instant cabin heat even during Alaskan summer. So anybody for a challenge to add it on W212?

I have a love/hate relationship with the "Rest" function in my older C320... The concept of retaining and circulation of residual heat sounds great, on the very rare occassions when I used it... maybe 3-4 times in the past 18 years.
On the other hand, pressing the Rest button was the only way to turn off the air conditioner when the weather permits circulation of outside air only.
In contrast, I DO appreciate the straight-forward A/C on/off function on the W212. I find this more useful than the former Rest function.

On W212 it works only when ignition is switched off and is not connected to AC work.
Modules with and without REST use the same software and have the different hardware so there is no way to get REST without climate panel changing.
Before doing that you should check auxiliary water pump at expansion tank.

I originally searched for what the REST function was when I got my car and didn't find much on it. Just a few weeks ago I was watching a W212 "tricks/hacks" video on youtube and it was explained there. I've used it almost every morning since while waiting for the train.

I can't see the videos posted below as it's blocked in the office.. but the ones I did watch were done by a Russian guy. They are all either physically obvious to what he's doing or includes enough English subtitles to explain what's going on. The only Russian I know is Stolichnaya!

The video above shows climatronic retrofit, when I understood you can open hidden menu for REST on factory unit. So is it possible or not?
Russian was my 2nd language, but I never used it actively. Still can read Cyrillic.

My local dealer couldn't even find it - I found it online.

What a pity by MB. I always wondered what the thing next to the coolant reservoir is with hoses connected to it and now I know it is that pump for the unused REST function that MB has chosen to disable for us.
I had an Audi Q7 before my first Benz and it had a small pump that automatically came ON to pump coolant around after I parked the car. This was said to keep coolant to circulate after stopping the engine to eliminate any hot spots inside the engine as when you shut the engine the heat is still in the engine and there are some areas where the coolant could get boiling if not moving. I thought this Audi system was very clever and though it really makes sense and wondered why MB does not have the same. Now I learned they really do but have disabled it for the U.S. market area. I don't need if for keeping the heat in the car for short stops. I would like to have it to help the engine last longer.
