Precisely the reasons if you ask me.....Personally I think performance wise the E400 is a better competitor to the 535 and A6 3.0T which would mean there is rooom for a 240-260 hp entry level model to compete with the 528i and the A6 2.0T (no I am not counting the E250 diesel).
Are they doing exhaust pulse tuning on the new 4.0TT setup?

The stop production of the E550 is probably not cafe related . If only two precent of all e-class cars built are the fore mentioned variant. If I had known earlier that 2014 was the cutoff point I would have ordered from the factory instead of scrambling around at the last minute to buy a car 500 miles away. I wonder how many E550 buyers are now shopping for the e63.

That's just what I was told, I can't verify that one way or another but it does make sense that for overall E-Class production it would be a small percentage as most E-Classes in Europe are the E2xx, and the like, and by far the most common E-Class I see everywhere is the E350. I'm sure it differs regionally but most markets are more concerned about fuel efficiency than power, and those that are willing to put the extra money into a performance car usually get the E63.

I am also pretty sure, that the E400 will offer similar performance for most streets other than the unlimited german Autobahn, compared to the E500. Therefore the decision could make sense. As already mentioned, most E-Class over here are E200, E220, E250 Diesel and Petrol. Nearly no E500 (which are available as RWD and AWD) are being sold.

@AMGAffalterbach - We're on the same page for so many reasons. Give or take a few points, I can buy 2%. I see you're in Highlands Ranch ... I just moved away from Niwot.

Everyone else - Let's talk more about how the 400 powerplant compares to the 550. All this talk of the 4.6L TT (or is a biturbo?!) motor being underrated makes me feel like a savvy buyer. Is there anymore evidence one way or the other?! Fingers crossed.

The E400 3.0L V6 TT (designated M276 DELA 30) already runs a relatively high boost pressure. Reportedly 1.8 bar or 26.1 psi.
For comparison - the I6 BMW N54 and N55 both run under 10 psi from my reading.
The easy path of adding a few pounds boost pressure may not be ideal for the Mercedes (if that stock boost pressure is correct).
Not a tuner here - would be interested to hear more on this.

Add: The Mercedes 3.5L V6 TT (designated M276 DELA 35) reportedly has a similar output at a reduced 0.7 bar - 10.2 psi boost.
