The W205 is better than the W204, but it's not better than a W212. The interior is fresher in design, but suffering from serious quality issues. Expanding on what A4tt22 said if someone wants a W205 get a C400 or a C450 for a 6 cyl and with leather to avoid the issues with C-class MBtex, and make sure your bumpers are aligned properly when you buy it.

Had a 2015 C400 as a loaner a few weeks back. Not ready to trade my 2011 E350 for that.

I have been driving an E, bought new in 2010, for a little over 4 years. I can not stop loving the car. Have driven some of the new C Class cars provided as loaners when my E was in for routine maintenance. Nice, quick but not the same. I would not trade my 2010 E for a C or even an newer E class. The 2010 MY is classic in my opinion. I would look for a good low milage 2010 or 2011 with low milage and buy a warranty. I would not own a Benz without one.

E's are the heart and soul of the MB sedan line. All the rest are pretenders in my book. C's just don't cut it and S class somehow lacks a sportiness but I do admit they are equally fine cars. It's been a while since I drove an S so maybe I should take a spin and compare.

If you think "sportiness" is the "heart and soul" of Mercedes, then it's quite obvious that you have no idea what you are talking about.
The W222 is Mercedes!

What is with the smart *** comment friend? I know full well an S is a W222.
I have been around these cars since I was a kid and I have 2 in my garage at the moment that are the 6th and 7th I have owned.
The first car I came across as kid was the W120.110 with the OM636 I4 diesel
That platform was the basis of the R121 aka the 190SL.
I have pictures of a 1957 220S coupe in my system.
I have had 2 W124s in both the SOHC 3L and the DOHC 3.2L which I put 300000km on the odometer, a W208 3.2L , a W211 E320 2WD sedan, a W211 E350 4Matic wagon, the current E350 4Matic and my SLK320. I am a member of the MBCA and have been for years. I attend workshops and tech seminars quite often.
The W124 was originally built to compete with the BMW as a Sport Sedan.
I have driven E class and S class cars on the autoban in Germany back in the day when the speed limits were not restrictedas Best speed was in an S at 260kp on the A5 between Frankfurt and Worns. A german called me "Ein Tiefleigher". Look it up
Maybe you might want to rethink your suggestion I don't know what I am talking about.

I said if you believe that "sportiness" is the "heart and soul" of Mercedes, then you don't know what you are talking about.
Regardless of you history... if you believe that "sportiness" is the "heart and soul" of Mercedes... Then you are clueless.

Do you really believe that "sportiness" is the "heart and soul" of Mercedes?

Also I find it hard to believe that anyone that knows Mercedes would actually claim that The S class is a "pretender"

How reliable are the used E Class cars? Is it a terrible idea to buy non-Certified Pre-owneds?
If you're buying/leasing new I would actually just buy a 2015 E-Class.

I was in the same boat and decided on the new C-Class because it just refreshed and looks a lot like the new S-Class class, but don't think it's worth it. You get more car if you can get an E-Class for the same price.

After the new C came out I drove it then a W204 then the a 2012 W212 back to back to back. The new car is a nice and fixes two of the major flaws of the W204, ride quality and noise. I didn't like the sound of the four cylinder, the lightness of the steering and the look of the ipad compared to the W204. though it certinly makes the W204 look dated now. I then got into and drove the E Class. It was a different world altogether. I felt like I was sitting in a wood paneled gentleman's club compared to a chic sushi bar (w205). The drive experience was more of the same. The things that the W205 have are better fuel mileage, handling, better small offset crash performance and more warranty. As been mentioned the early build quality has been bad.

Tjdehya,
And if you read what I said I said for me the E - not the sportiness - is the heart of the MB sedan line. That infers more that the narrow focus you are choosing to apply to my comment
I will respect you right to disagree with me but where is it written I am not entitled to a different opinion than you let alone some respect?
You are entitled to your views for sure but not to attack me for mine.
I see you drive an E550 so you have lots of S experience no doubt with the W222 current S model and its predecessors the W116, W126, W140 - for which they had to change German laws because the S600 exceeded legal weight limits for a passenger car-, W220 and the W221 right?

I agree with you about the "iPad" feature for Comand. They have done it that way in a number of cars. I have not seen any reports as yet but I wonder if some kids might rip it off thinking that it is more than what it is.
My W211's, particularly the 2003 with the SBS system were alleged to have build quality issues which from my experience seemed to come from some of the gadgets, the brakes being at the head of the line for many.
My service guys seemed to stay on top of this stuff, updating software, re-adjusting seat memory card systems etc. so I really didn't have all that many issues.
The 2009 W211 of course had conventional brakes, the key dependent auto seat memory system was gone in that car and it was fine.
The biggest issue I have had in the 2011 E350 4Matic wagon was the rear suspension air pump (once) and rear suspension air bags (twice). All are good now after 4 yr.

Have you driven a 2015 E Class ? It is significantly improved over the pre-facelift versions. For example, the steering is much improved, more direct and better road feel. The 7G transmission is a huge step above the pre-2015 versions, shifts both faster and smoother.

As for crash performance, the 2014 (post January 2014 production) and 2015 E Class are the ONLY German luxury sedans that have achieved the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating !!!! The W205 has not even been rated by IIHS !!!

In terms of build quality and material quality, there is no contest between the W205 and the current E Class, which is far superior ! The sloppy assembly quality for W205 coming out of Alabama is embarrassing for Mercedes. From oozing seats to poorly fitted bumpers and tail lights, electronic issues, excessive wind noise, recalls for steering and tires, the list keeps growing !

Do you know if the 2015 7G is different from my 2011 7G?
Mine is listed on my build card as 722960 03.
I was amazed at how lazy it had become over the 55000 km and 4 yr it has been in service but with an ECU reset last week it is once again smooth, faster on downshifts and in Sport mode shifts are crisper under full throttle.
I will be doing a reset at least every 4 months going forward now I know the procedures.
I would be curious to know if there are any differences 2011 to 2015 in the trans. model numbers. Thanks.

Sorry, I do not have the new model number for the "7G-Tronic Plus" transmission, since I do have my car's build card.

According to MB Canada's website, the 7G-Tronic Plus "has undergone extensive modifications in comparison to its predecessor in the area of smooth gear changing, fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions." The 7G-Tronic + was introduced for MY2014.

Besides improved shifting as previously described, it also has a temporary manual mode that can be selected with the paddle shifter.

I can't get any a number on the transmission post 2012 when they introduced the 7G tronic plus as far as I can see.
This is all I came up with.

Interesting read ! This article suggest that the transmission was installed in 2012. However, according to MB's MY2014 Product Management guide, this transmission was 'new' for 2014 E Class. It was not present in my previous 2013 E350BT.

The OP is asking about a 2010-11 E class not a 2015. I am aware of the improvements made to the to late 2014/2015 including the reinforcement to the floor for the improved small offset. You are correct regarding the fact the at the new C hasn't been tested but I think given the performance of the W204 Mercedes will have made the necessary corrections such the the W205 will make a good showing. I should have made it clearer that I much prefer the stateliness of ambiance and drive of the E over the new C. We are in violent agreement which is the preferred car. Just providing objective feedback. I try not to lock myself into positions but at this time I would prefer a W212 over the new W205, though I do prefer the mini-W222 exterior of the luxury version with the distronic grill of the W205 over the facelifted W212.

New C Class??

I would take the new C Class over the current E Class. The C is updated in so many ways and the drive should be comparable or even better for the C. Cost of operation over the next 2 years will proabaly be less for the C also. And WOW, the looks you get will make it worthwhile. Happy driving.

I really like this topic. Let me explain. My father has always purchased the "E" class. At 37, I got into my first Mercedes, a 2013 W204 C350 well equipped. I really like the refreshed E sport sedan. I would say, and in only my opinion, the CLS makes the most sense for a jump. That is unless the slightly compromised rear head room is an issue. I don't feel inferior driving a C class and I do admire an E class when I see one. Drive what you like, have fun!

Having owned two previous C's I cannot (yet) appreciate the new rear end. Maybe it will grow on me, I don't know. While they improved the severely cramped rear seating (for all but small children), it's not enough in my opinion. I find the E-class to be just large enough for my needs with a nice balance of features and comfort, and when we go to dinner with another couple they don't have bruised knees anymore . I hope MB doesn't go to the tablet stuck on the dash for everything (although apparently they did not do that with the new S-class, perhaps fearing a violent reaction), unless they find a better way to integrate. For my money, the E.

Therefore what I posted is relevant... IMO I would choose a W205 instead of an old, used, outdated, and out of warranty W212. JMO
+1 on bringing up the warranty. I like smaller cars, so I'd take a more loaded C Class any day, especially with the new updates that I'm really digging for

Yes I have driven the new 2015 E class and do not like it better than my old 2010 E class. I am very familiar with the new steering system in the 2015 MY. It is also in my 2011 S class. I do like that improvement but there is more road feel in the traditional technology, IMO. My older E just feels, for lack of a better description, less mass produced than the new E. I have no complaints about the fit and finish of my '10 and I have had next to no problems other than a few issues in the first six months of ownership.

Driving the 2015 E did not make me want to replace my 2010 E nor has driving any of the new C class editions. Yes, they are all quicker but I am not in that big a hurry most of the time. If I want to get there quick I drive the S. I would not characterize the S as sporty either. Stately is the word that comes to mind. All of these cars will get me a speeding ticket faster than necessary. All of that being said, I would not own any of these cars without a warranty. I just bought 3 more years of MB warranty for the E. I am covered till 2017. Time will tell how the car holds up the next three years.
