Public Service Announcement - Potholes!

A lot of the country is experiencing abnormal cold weather conditions, so I wanted to remind everyone to be on the look out for potholes on the freeway.

This is something we are not accustomed to in Dallas/Fort Worth and I wouldn't want anyone else to have the experience I did yesterday on my way home form work.

In Chicago, we call those road blemishes. I've probably replaced no less than 20 wheels over my years of driving here; usually with 2 at a time.

Did that wheel hold air long enough to get to a reasonable stopping point?

Sorry to see that happen to anyone's car. Key08 is right. In Chicago it is a fact of life if you drive. Some suburbs outside of Chicago are just as bad. I have replaced no less than 15 wheels over my driving time. When the wheels cost to much I go through the insurance. I even collected once from the city of wheeling Illinois for a pot hole on Milwaukee ave.

Thank god I bought the Rim and Tire Protection for 60 months.
So far I've replace an O.E.M. Rim + 2# Winter Tires and 1 All Seasons Tire within one year.
It's all covered and no questions asked.

I've gotten back much more than what I paid for the protection and I still have over three years to go on the policy.

Had no idea that they offered a rim and tire protection policy

After you and the sales manager signed the purchase offer, you arethen led to the finance manager who will try to up-sell you with all kinds of protections ( Paint/Leather/Rim + Tire/rust proofing, Extended Warranty, etc.).

If I intend to keep the car for at least 5 years I normally go for the Rim+Tire Protection and Extended Warranty.
I also get the dealer to install windows tint.

The tire held air and actually appears to be undamaged. I used the tire pressure monitor as I continued my journey home and the air pressure never changed.

The new rim was ordered today and they will do a further inspection on the tire once it's unmounted from the rim. Fingers crossed... the tire was only a few months old.

dc-it my finance guy was a total idiot. Never explained anything just pointed and said sign here. He was in a hurry. He even gave us the wrong papers for the car. Had to go back the next day to get the correct papers and warranty. I told owner he should be fired.

Wow, that's quite the damage. The pot holes here in socal feel bad enough driving over them. I can't imagine how bad some pot holes can get in other parts of the country.

dbdpr: Your dealer is loosing lots of extra sales with this finance manager. He should be fired!
So far in all my car buying experiences the finance manager always lay out all the goodies for me to consider. All I have to do is select the ones I want.

DC-IT In order for me to get my title after 3 months I had to go to the Illinois state police to file a report that they never sent in the paperwork for my title. After they got a call from the State police I finally got my title. Dealership was Motor Werks in Barrington Illinois

Like I said, they always come in pairs for me. Large wheel diameters and low profile tires always look great, but they do have their drawbacks when it comes to riding out a potholed road. Good luck!

Finance girl told me tire/rim protection only covered OEM tires and wheels and that if I were to replace the tires with winter tires or other better performing tires those would not be covered. Was she wrong? I knew I wouldn't be keeping those Contis on for too long since I knew I wanted PSSs.

I would be concerned about any tire bead if it took enough of a hit that the rim was damaged to that extent. Thinking that it may be weakened at that impact point and at the sidewalls - while it may pass a visual inspection, who knows what the inner core/bead looks like and what may happen over time and with the amount of heat/cold cycles and constant road bumps the tires are constantly exposed to. I'm not saying it would cause a sudden failure, but for me that's out of my comfort zone, especially if I had road hazard replacement on the tires.

The tires were removed, inspected and are good to go. No need to replace them.
Except for the tire that was ripped during removal. The dealer is replacing the tire for free... but it has to be special ordered. In the mean time... they put on another brand tire in the same size.

So now I am driving around with 3 new rims and 1 odd tire.

Drove to Houston last Friday during that freeze, big risk as it took me 3 hrs to get past Dallas area coming from the Northwest. I consider myself to be a pro at dodging potholes, but I feel your pain since i've seen how bad those potholes have grown during these last few freezes.

Now, it wouldn't make sense for the dealer to sell tire and rim warranty if you could buy any you want and then bring it to them to have them replaced under that warranty, would it?

Been driving in SoCal over 50 years and have never had tire or rim damage from a pothole....or any road debris for that matter. Not bragging, I just don't understand the problem. I can see in severe/cold weather states where water fills cracks, freezes, then expands and makes a hole but we don't have that kind of weather here.

Yeah, been in SoCal all my life, never had any trouble with potholes big enough to damage my tires/rims. Maybe he went through some rough neighborhoods

Absolutely not, reason I asked was because one of the above posters posted this:

So I found it odd he was able to get them to replace 2 winter tires when I'm positive there are no OEM winter tires that come stock.
