Transmission in E550

Anyone know if the transmissions in the E550 are different than the E350?
I assume it would be designed to handle the higher torque. Also, there have been some posts regarding tranny problems in the E350, but I haven't seen any complaints for the E550. Are there just too few of them or are they more robust?

Thanks.

Hi Koyla. I've had my 2012 E550 since March 2012 and the transmission has been "acting up" for at least the last 2 years. The problem is when I am at a full stop and then release the brake pedal, the car will lurch quite strongly before it moves. I have taken it into the local MB dealer 3 different times for the problem; the first time they said they can't duplicate the problem. The second time they said that they updated the software. And the third time, just 2 weeks ago, they kept the car for 10 days and supposedly "reflashed" the software.

It has helped as it does feel better. Not sure how long it will last though, so I've actually just placed an order for a 2015 GL550 and it should be here in July. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did because other than the transmission, the E550 is a fantastic car.

Hi Dipper

I too have a 2012 E550 and went hunting for that lurching issue. Turns out it's a decoupler on the torque converter which is supposed to increase average fuel economy of the car. So when you let off the brake, there is a lag while it re-engages the driveshaft. There is a thread on here with both the details and how to override the function. If I recall, you cannot turn it off, only override it when you come to a stop. I think the thread said something about holding one of the paddles while you come to the stop. That being said, I've never felt the need to over ride the function.

So far though, my car has been a bit bulletproof.
