Navigation CD?

Hey everyone,

I don't use my car navigation that much as it's not that accurate compared to Google Maps. I went to Mercedes for other reasons and asked about a CD to update the maps.

They told me $250-275 for the CD. Is this legit? My car is under CPO warranty and I kind of expected them to just install it for me... maybe that's unrealistic?

That is the price my dealer offers the updates for. It's about the same as buying directly from the company online. Just seach nav update in the forum and you will see plenty of threads on the subject.

What version of the maps are you on? Ideally they would have updated the map prior to purchase for you but the car could still be on the original. Honestly, many have reported that even the most recent map updates are still behind recent new roads in their area. I use Waze on my smartphone instead.

That's basically what I figured. I'll stick to using Google Maps I guess.

I found a board member who sold me his 2014 US Map DVD

at half that price for my GL450. Still, expect to pay at least $140 if you can locate an OEM DVD.

My dealer does the update for $70 without having to buy the dvd.

I think there was a post about a dealer or someone in Texas who was charging $70 for the update. Now you have another reason to go to TX.

Since the DVD is not installed in the car and is only used to copy the update to the HDD, I am surprised more places don't offer this as a lower cost service. I suppose there are issues with licensing or copyrights that don't allow them to do this.

When the dealership did mine a couple of years ago, they left the DVD's (2) in the glove compartment.

Did you pay the full ~$250 price or a cheaper service fee? Also, were you satisfied the differences from the update?

Special deal

Got a super special deal which I can't discuss.
Very, very little changed that I actually use. Considering it was three years newer, I was surprised at same errors still being present. I think the graphics for interstate exits changed, but nothing else that I could benefit from.

Test one at dealer?

Anyone interested in updating COMAND Nav. might want to see if you can go to dealership and sit in a car with the newest version for a while. Then enter some test destinations, POI's, etc. to see if different.
IMO, not worth the time it takes to do it, much less pay for it.

That's basically what I figured. I use navigation every day and sometimes have to change it quickly... my phone with Google Maps recognizes my voice perfectly every time and it's easy... using the car nav is a chore.

I'll stick with my phone I guess!

Sounds like you paid the right price for the update

That's a good idea to check out the newer maps and POI's before forking over any $$ for it. I had hoped that navteq would allow you to preview online the maps and poi's in the latest available version or post highlights of what was added by major city as a way to entice you into an upgrade. All they give are stats about how many poi's were added or updated - no ability to see details. However, after hearing stories like yours about being underwhelmed by the updated maps, I guess that would be a disincentive.
