If you squeeze the black looking tab thing in the second picture, you could pull back the whole plastic thing to make it bunch up. For what purpose I have no idea, and just to clear up if my directions don't make sense,I apologize in advance! lol!

It's pity that the doors cannot hold a one liter water bottle and they have to resort to this ugly thing. I can't believe why MB skimps out on such basic functionalities.

Actually it is more of an annoyance. If you rest your leg in that direction it is very irritating especially on long trips. If you remove it you have holes. Oh well the best or nothing.

I think its an odd design, keeping bottles of liquid in a car doesn't sound all the great anyway, especially if you leave your car in the sun for a long time (or snow in winter).
Putting a compact umbrella there might be more useful.
It's one 'luxury' I'm glad my car doesn't have...

I use it instead of cup holders but it literally confines the bottles in its place,I wonder why on Mercedes-Benz Earth not any S Class has ever come up with useful things

I was shocked when I first found out that it was a bottle holder. I've not used that thing one time that I can remember. I guess it can be useful but it does look like an umbrella or junk holder.

i think it's a great idea and transport a wine bottle when headed to someone's house for dinner. You can also store wine in the trunk netting, but then you need to go in and out of the trunk. That drawer under the seat holds my collapsed umbrella, sunglasses and other stuff.

I think it is a European thing where people tend to carry wine in their vehicles more often. Was not designed for water bottles, although mine is used for that purpose occasionally.
Of course, it is illegal in many US states to carry an open alcohol container, so it would have to be an unopened wine bottle.

Do you have one on the driver's side in the trunk? That is what I am looking to find.

My trunk has two - one on each side. Not really big enough for much though.
The one in the car is meant to carry water/liquid you plan to drink during a trip. Therefore, getting hot or cold would not be an issue - hopefully.
As for collapsible umbrella, I keep that in storage pocket under the seat.
I do keep a bottle of water in one of the nets in the trunk for emergencies.

The attachment points are about 17 to 20 inches front to back and maybe 7 or 8 inches high. This creates a space about 4 inches by 10 inches. The MB service dealer in Vancouver cannot find it listed in their parts list - so they cannot order it for me. I wonder if MBUSA has it in their parts lists.
