E550 Rare - Why?

I'll go one step further, maybe two: use not only premium fuel but also look for Top Tier brands. Specifically, Conoco or Chevron if you can find them. Why? Because my last two vehicles have been the 2012 ML350 SUV (6 cyl.) and now the 2017 CLS550 twin turbo V8. Two very different vehicles and two very different motors. I have used nothing but these two brands for both cars and have had excellent performance and gas mileage - not a single problem. I have to attribute it to the quality of their additive packs. Based on this experience, I would say the relatively small increase in your fuel budget in buying the best gas is well worth it.

Supposedly all Top Tier gasolines have about the same additives. I use QT because they don't gouge you on Premium. BP and Shell in this area are way higher on Premium than other stations. Ironically, regular is the same as other stations.

You have to use Premium so that it doesn't knock and cause issues. The octane level affects retardation, especially for vehicles tuned to consume 91+octane (in North America; EU has 98-100, which is the same)
I use Shell V-Power, because of Air Miles.
I like how the E550 is so rare. Mine has everything, including the night vision! I don't think cooling seats were offered in Canada?

I always use chevron 94
Or shell 91 V power nitro+
My car is fully loaded as well, included seat cooling fan
But no night vision.

It may just be the opposite. Direct injection engine works like diesel engine for the fuel, i.e. the fuel is not introduced in the cylinder before it is time for it to detonate. For this reason the DI engine could probably use the lowest octane fuel available just fine.

The E550 is so rare in my area, I'm the only one in my town with one and have only seen 3 w212 E550's ever. What makes them even more rare is a pano roof as they are a limited production as well. When I ordered mine, the dealership in OKC was only getting 2 which one was my order. I was the very 1st person to purchase a w212 E550 in the State of Oklahoma in 2010. For my area my car is incredibly rare!! If I recall correctly, they only sold 5 at MB of OKC in 2010. They are also less than 5% of the E class market. My sales rep at MB said there is a very high demand for the used NA 550's now though. They definitely tried to work me out of my car but their offers are almost insultingly rediculous!!

Yes, they'll try to get more for E550s on the re-sale side (vs.E350), but won't pay much more (if any) for it as a trade-in than for E350.
