There were times where I wondered if I should've bought an E63 or my E550 of the same model year. Sigh.

Well people sell cars all the time. Usually to get something newer.

You normally get more private party than through a dealer, but if the price is too high, the dealer is always there with ready cash. I've seen some pretty good prices on some AMG models in the classifieds, below rough trade in and they end up trading them into the dealer. The ones at retail or higher tend to just sit there forever. I ended up getting my 2011 E350 from a private party, he just wanted 1k over what the dealer offered him, and they low balled him to begin with so it was a pretty good deal, dealer spread is typically at least 2-5k depending on the starting price.

I saw another w212 E550 on the road today! I feel like I haven't seen one for like a year. I wanted to wave at him but it was an elderly person and he didn't look my way :B

I saw a black W212 E550 (like mine) on the highway the other day, but I had the gf in the car and she doesn't like when I play on the highway, so I had to be civilized... unlike him, who was weaving through traffic... otherwise I would've followed the path he was making. Maybe it's time to invest in
lol

1999 SL 500 & 2011 E 550 4Matic
The E550 is aimed more at someone who views a car as a way to have some fun and actually enjoys driving. Someone who wants the practical functionality of a DD car, but doesn't want the annual auto insurance tab of an AMG. So it's a very nice trade-off in that aspect. All in a decent luxury ride where, if necessary you can actually have more than one passenger and everyone is comfortable on long drives. Not something you can say about a Vette, Porsche, Aston Martin or most other luxury cars. Those are more geared to be simply to be either pure sports cars or sports sedans with only two occupants and no real usable trunk space.

Anyway, that's my perspective and I hope you enjoy your E550. It's real fun to drive. By the way, if you think it's rare now, wait in a few years when all MB is selling in its non-AMG vehicles will be 4 and 6 cylinder models.
I am a new E 550 driver ... and agree completely.

The 1999 SL is fun with the top down and practical enough for any road trip for two ... but the practicality & extra power of the E 550 is undeniable & great fun.

I was not aware that E 550 is "rare" but I an noticing this recently as well. Going to start paying more attention to see how rare here in Vancouver Canada.

Welcome to the club. Way to dig up an old and long thread full of debate, lol.

I'm over 3 years with my 2012 E550 now and still enjoying every bit of it. I have been watching for a perfect "unicorn" 2014 E550 sedan for about 2 years (under 30k budget) none have come up at this price, they seem to be holding rock solid for the past 2 years. One comes up now and then around $28k, but all from northern states, so I don't want to deal with any potential corrosion issues.

I look around and wonder what I could buy that has the power of this car and the luxury with the full utility of a mid size sedan, so far the answer is an Audi S7, which goes for quite a bit more money, or a BMW 650 4 door, which I would not touch with a ten foot pole even though it's beautiful. The simple answer is basically nothing is going to get me out of this car unless I wanted to spend almost double, and MB have dropped the V8 in their new E class offerings unless you pay big $$ now and later to own the AMG version.

I live right next to a Eurocharged shop, and have thought many times to go and drop the tune on it, but in the end I decide to keep it stock and reliable, because I never really even tap the full power I have available now. I rarely put it in sports mode, because my daily commute is only a total of about 10 miles on city streets with speed limits mostly 30mph.

3 years, 65k to now 92k miles, all I have done is basic maintenance A few oil changes, a set of brakes and tires, just changed the spark plugs and need to get trans service done very soon. Great car!

Well it looks like I was pretty accurate three years ago with the direction MB would take all of its non-AMG vehicles. Aside from the S Class, the non-AMG vehicles are all now 4 and 6 cylinder vehicles. So definitely enjoy your your E550, because at least in my personal opinion, it is the last really fun to drive E that you can get aside from the E63. Also, again solely from my personal perspective, it is better looking than the new, more bland, Japanese style exteriors on the current E.

I have tried to take notice recently ... Including ours ... I have seen (10) E Class cars in parking lots or on the road recently;

(3) I did not catch the designation
(3) were E 550
(4) were E 350

Not as rare as the posts above imply. In these parts.

It depends on location of course. I grew up in the Midwest where anything but Ford Chevy or Dodge was rare, and anything German was super rare and exotic. In Miami a Mercedes E is like a Malibu or a Camry anywhere else.

2010 E550 RWD with only 7,667 miles

FYI - I just came across a 2010 E550 RWD with ONLY 7,667 miles on it listed for sale on Auto Trader.com for $29,900. If it wasn’t RWD, I would probably make an offer.

I'd rather have the ultra rare 2014 with a bit more mileage for the same price. 2010 is the old non turbo engine and I'd be worried more about a 9 yr old car with that little mileage on it.

My 2010 has 159600 miles on the clock and runs like a tank. I would go after the one with such low mileage if I didn't have the car already.

Does it say what packages is included?

Yeah same here. Rather have one with normal mileage. That's probably way too high even for a 2010 with such low mileage. You get a slight boost for low mileage but not that much.

As for one with P1, that's basically nothing. They pretty much all had the P1 package so P1 would be basically a base model car. P2, driver assistance package, pano, parktronic etc are real options.

yep, the Pano would be awesome, especially in the 550.

2012 W212 E550 Sedan
Hi! Recent 2012 E550 4matic sedan purchase here after many years with a W208. I thought this thread was perfect for this story...Some background: I'm mid 40's and do the PA Tpke to NJ Tpke to Secaucus Junction to go to NYC 3-4x/month. I don't drive like a jerk. Fast, but with total respect for all on the road. I pass, get over and don't get any complex like many when passed. It's a solid 130 mile trip and fun to do as it's all highway, in about 1:45 and extremely comfortable in this car, I just set the cruise and go. I had an interesting trip last weekend as I guess someone took offense to either being passed or me doing 84mph which ironically gets me passed by many, many times on both those roads. I typically hit the rest stop on the NJ Tpke NB just before the rt 195 exit. I go pee and when I exit the men's room, there is this late 30's guy waiting for me, obviously with some sort of inferiority complex, and long blond hair, a great **** stache and flannel, and points at me and in a condescending voice says, It's not a turbo!! His GF told him to Shhh! stop it! I just rolled my eyes and laughed and said "Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!!" and went on my merry way.

I also came from w208 CLK430 to 2012 E550. Loved my sexy W208 and I would have kept it longer if I didn't need a 4 door, and/or had an extra garage to store it. I had my exhaust modded slightly on the W208 and it had a nice soft rumble tone. I tried to do the same on this E550 by chopping out the rear resonator, but the turbos just suck up all the exhaust sound. I've gotten used to being silent but deadly! It's definitely a sleeper, and a perfect highway cruiser, which I rarely do, but if I did, I would want some extras I don't have, like massaging seats and distronic + lane assist package.

2011 E550 coupe
I was driving earlier today and I saw an E350 sedan and I thought to myself how rare my car is. I barely ever, and i mean ever see another E550 coupe around, let alone a 2011 like mine. It really is a very rare car, and I still absolutely love driving it!

I bought it CPO in mint condition in 2013 and I don't imagine I will ever get rid of it. I like that big 8 cylinder in it, and it only has like 60K miles on it as a 2nd car. I will continue to have it dealer maintained like clockwork yearly.
