Buying advice w212 e500 blue effcieny

Hi,
Im am currently in the market for a used daily driver that is fast, spacious and reliable. A 2011-2012 w212 E500 blue efficieny seems really good but i am a bit worried about that 7-G transmission after reading about the car. Is this problem affecting all cars? How can I detect it? Is it expensive to sort it out? DIY?

Is there any common problems related to very cold climate?

All advice on buying a used w212 E500 BE is greatly appreciated.

Best regards
Jonne

Good evening Jonne,
I have been driving a 2012 E500 BE 4matic since 2013. Meanwhile, I put ~100.000km on that car.

The car is not fully loaded. However, it has some nice options, like: Panorama sunroof, Night Vision, Distronic, Memory, Keyless, active seats, Comand Online including DAB and TV and so on.

Regarding those options: I did not have a failure except the passenger side heated seat.

However, I did have major problems with the basics of that car itself!
1. Drivetrain: Currently I am on my third set of chain tensioners! The drive train is over and over rattling again and again. Also, there are some cases of total engine failures in Germany (waves in cylinder number three). My engine is still having trouble with noise. The source for that noise is still under investigation by Mercedes Germany...:

Other than that, my car got a new rear differential and a few software updates for the transmission due to problems with jerking when one starts rolling after a stop.

2. Suspension
My car has the AIRMATIC. Both rear dampers had to be replaced due to oil-leaks! Both front air struts had to be replaced due to air leaks. The steering rack was replaced due to noise. The front sway bar was replaced due to noise. Other than that, nothing was worn out...

3. Front lights
My car has the ILS-HID Lights. Both front lights had to be replaced (3.500 €) as they were filmed with a milky layer inside...

To make a long story short: This car is a beast when running.

However, compared to my Ex-S211 2008 E500 5.5, which I drove over 200.000km, it is just a total disappointment regarding reliability.

Well that didnt sound too good... Whatever happened to MB reliability? When i was a kid MB reliability was always really good. These days it seems MB, Audi and BMW all have become unreliable.

In my circle of friends, there are three further E550 (2010). All of them did have serve failures before reaching 100.000km. All of them were effected by the headlight-problem. On had a fatal ac-compressor failure, one had an -unsolved- AIRMATIC failure (AIRMATIC is unbelievable stiff!) and so on.
