In general map updates are not worth it unless your system is at least 7-10 years old. I believe Garmin website will show which areas have been updated in the last few years. If the area of your interest has not been updated then it's totally worthless. You should be able to buy the CD online as well and you need to keep your engine running for a few hours while it updates. Forum member "Arrie" should have the details. Good luck.

The dealer (possibly the NAVTEQ site) is/are the only locations to get a map update. Maps from any other source are bootleg and won't be discussed here as it would get the site into trouble. Most won't work anyway.
Not all parts of the US are re-done each year so you should check the NAVTEQ site to see if your area was updated this year. If it was, make sure that the maps and not just the POI were updated.
Each area is generally re-mapped every 5 years.
