Unplugging factory sub
Yes it has Harmon Kardon, I installed a 12 inch subwoofer and I really want to unplug the factory one to avoid distortion and possibly messing it up.

Yes, I have the HK system which produces almost NO bass as stock, and the little it does produce is very bad quality compared the the new RF subwoofer. This is why I chose to keep the stock sub unplugged.
Just look in the trunk, look up to the bottom side of the package tray. There is a very obvious speaker directly in the center with a large white clip-in plug, just pull it out.
I find the mid-high of the HK system acceptable with the RF sub tuned the way I have it now.

Jon, can you post a picture of the area you're talking about? I'm not sure where to look and I see a speaker but I don't see a plug in around it.

Is there a thread on how to remove the panels in the trunk? I have searched for the interior section that some have referred to, but I get no results. I have a 2012 E350. Thank you.

Rear shelf removal instructions?
Thank you very much KT! You always come through for the Forum.
Do you have anything on removing the rear shelf? Is removing the speaker grill sufficient to DC the factory woofer? I have the fold down seats.
Kind regards.

Hi guys, This post is very helpful.
Well I've had mine in for almost a week now. Extremely easy install...I tapped into the small brown & white wires for signal (outside of factory amp), and the medium sized black wire for signal turn-on. I spliced them, soldered all connections, and shrink wrapped them with my heat gun and some shrink tubing.
Amp power was taken from the ECO battery junction adjacent to my spare tire, and factory grounding point near spare tire was used to ground the amp. The only wire I've routed into the cabin is the adjustable remote so I can turn the bass off (or up and down).
I also unplugged factory sub.
Thanks for the ideas and help - very useful for those who want to add a bit of punch on occasion, for very little money. Since I listen to mostly talk radio, but enjoy a good sound when I actually listen to music, this was the perfect solution.

You must have tapped signal after the amplifier, you want to tap the pre-amp signal for clean sound. Review the procedure.

How to get through firewall?
What’s the best way to get the power cable through the firewall? Also, why did you install a remote wire? If I remember correctly, this amp/sub combo (which I own and had installed
in my previous car) doesn’t need a remote.

For the power wire, I ran it into the cabin air intake area, just behind the battery, I had to drill a small hole through some plastic and drop it down behind the firewall, then ran it down the right side under the door sill plastic, there is a wiring channel. It's easy to remove the bottom of the rear seat, look for instructions on that, but basically two clips that hold the bottom seat cushion down on either side, then ran it into the trunk.
The amp/sub combo I used came with a remote gain control which I ran into the glove box, but honestly I have never really touched it, so not necessary. I find that just modifying the bass in the dash settings is enough to bring the bass down to family-friendly levels with my setup.
