To sum it up of the 4 main components that go - Airmatic, Turbos, Brakes, and 4Matic. Only one of these would not be covered by warranty most likely (Brakes). So if you get a warranty you should be str8 and have little to no worries. Did you pull the trigger yet OP?

2012+ E550 don't have Airmatic to worry about, except the rare few that were ordered as an option. I haven't seen any complaints around regarding the 4matic, but differential fluid changes should be part of standard maintenance intervals.
As far as the sticky brake, not sure if the GLK350 mentioned has the electronic braking, but I believe it to be related to the "brake by wire" type system, it takes a split second to interpret that your foot is off the brake, as opposed to a mechanical braking system with direct feedback.

I've read of transfer case issues. Some of the poster skim over it in this post. I've seen it several other places on here. I'm sure a detailed search will bring up more information on it.

I've also seen a few things like this related to E350 4matic, but not related specifically to E550. I would think the drive train components are different in some way on the E550 for additional HP and Torque.

It was part of the buying process. They disclosed it before I even showed up for the initial test drive and indicated it would be fixed by delivery, which is was. What it was I have no idea, but it was BRUTAL.

Glad you love your E550; they are wonderful cars! The sticky brake pedal could be a, "feature" of the E550, which has been covered on this site before. It's a de-clutching mechanism which is supposed to increase the efficiency of the system by disconnecting the driveshaft when stopped. The lag which feels like a sticky brake is actually the lag in recouping the driveshaft when you release the brakes.
I bought a CPO 2013 E550 with 40k. Been great so far but it's needed a few things:
-rear sunshade out of alignment and had to be replaced
-horrid creak from pano roof over bumps
-all 4 corners of brakes replaced
-walnut trim showing signs of failing - there have the parts on order. Looks like scuffing on the clear
I'm chasing now:
-sticky brake pedal - sometimes there is a slight lag when I left off the brake, an d no it is not the hold function. They were hoping with the bad brakes it would go away with the new ones. It did not.
-rattle at cold startup - I fear the issue JMG had. Rattles and I hear the turbo's whistle a little bit. Never had a turbo car with audible turbos at idle before. We shall see.
-once the dealer prep wore off of the rear leather seats I have seen some 'hazing' that I am going to send in pictures of. It's weird.
-driveline vibration at around 1500 rpms. It's quick and consistent no matter the gear. I just want them to look at it. Could totally be common but I'm new to the MB sedanE550 thing.
All this said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the car! These headaches are worth it (so far).

I bet that the leather hazing will go out with a good leather cleaner - get the leather master's one.
Mine has been pretty trouble free - other than front brakes and a switch in the steering column.

Thanks - I found this which clears it up. Looks like it may be normal, though it's still an odd feature........

I've seen it for both. People in that post are E550 owners and say they've had issues with the transfer case. It's nearly as common as airmatic and warp rotor issues. That's why I put it in my top 4 issues for E550 whether an option or not.

where do i start...
ok so cel came on in march this year. it would come on and off sometimes with days in between.. finally in June i brought it into my fav tech guy to take a look. The call i got back was not cool. O2 sensor was gone, because it was drowning in oil.... turns out the camshaft position sensors had sprung seal leaks and flooded my engine harness trapping at the lowest point the o2 sensors and killing them. out of warranty ... Seems the same sensors were the subject of a massive recall on the 09-11 cars with the 153 engine and they used the same ****ty sensors on the 12 up till around may 2012 when the recall went out and that part discontinued., The recall was not extended to early production 2012s.... all cam shaft and o2 sensors changed.. wiring harness cleaned as best we could and put back..
5 days later cel comes back on - boost issues... p2263 error code. This has now stumped everyone under the sun.. the car has been smoked 3 times for leaks by 3 different techs and locations including merc dealer.
replaced thus far:
Love this car but get a 2013 - the subtle changes they made like separate turbo management make a big difference. This engine was still not finished in 2012....
PS turbos were verified and they are clean and spinning fine..
so now i am thinking the cats are junk...probably another 2000$...

replaced thus far:
- boost pressure sensor
- wastegate solenoid
- turbo tubing
- vacuum pump (germany recommended)

i have a 14 e550, the only issue I've had with is was the coolant container had a crack in it. It could have been from the old owner or when I bought i went WOT pretty much every drive lol.. Hey its my first MB and v8 biturbo so I was excited lol.. But all and all, its a great car.. I love it... i have about 56K miles on it and that was the only issue thus far.

The first part with the cam shaft sensor and the O2 sensors sounds exactly what my car is going through. My car doesn't go in until January 3rd. Can you give me any more details?

After spending days trying to discover the oil source his buddy from benz suggested the sensors... It even went as high as the ECU.
Good times..

Nothing specific to the M278 powerplant in the year and a half that I've owned mine. Perf is great and the mpg is plenty good enough. The 4Matic crushes snow covered roads. All in all, I'm incredibly happy with my E550 (my first Merc).
Other issues: popping pano roof, dead LED tail light, replaced one flickering xenon / hid headlight bulb and replaced one sun shade where a plastic clip broke. The gas door is finicky, but I think it's just the tether to the cap getting in the way. A parking sensor threw a fit one cold morning, but never again. Serviced (replaced?) the water barrier under the hood that surrounds the motor. Reprogrammed the front pass seat to allow it to be adjusted when the rear seats are folded down.

I’ve also dealt with an occasionally persnickety sliding door in the center console. Sometimes it works great and other times it won’t slide smoothly or fully retract. And it rattles a bit when closed. The stealer has been in there a few times to lube and/or adjust it, so I think it is what it is for my car.
My parking sensors act up briefly 1-2x/yr, but I honestly think it’s indicative of some glitch or road debris in there and not a component failure.
The xenon / hid headlight bulb that was replaced on the driver side remains yellower than the older one on the passenger side (hard to know if the pass side is factory original since I didn’t buy the car new but I’m guessing it is). Used to drive my OCD nuts, but now sadly is “whatever.” It’s been more than year and it hasn’t gotten any whiter.
The etching in both of my headlight covers remains ever present. The stealer tried “cleaning” it from the inside, but it didn’t do much and is back to the same way as it looked before. I’ll bug the stealer one last time later this year before my extended warranty expires in hopes of a replacement set. Maybe they can address the xenon / his mis-match then...
All in all, I’m grateful that it’s all been minor stuff on my 2012 E550 (bought with <20k mi and now closing in on 45k mi. Just like the reviews said to expect.
Hurry, knock on wood!

I have a 2011 E550 4Matic that I purchased three years ago. It was a CPO with 37k on the clock. It now has 76k. I doubled the warranty to four years and very glad I did. I love the car but if anything seems out of sorts I immediately take it to the dealer for repair.
Issues to date:
Warped front rotors twice. The first time the dealer replaced. The second time I purchased better rotors and did the install myself. I think the MB rotors are made in china and they are crap.
Dealer replaced all the wood trim.
Dealer replaced rear shocks, compressor and valve. The rearend of the car would drop to the ground overnight.
Plastic covering the left rear control arm came loose and was dragging on the ground. The dealer replaced it.
Dealer replaced the command knob post.
The 5.4l is a great engine and never feels weak and I love the 4Matic. I change the oil ever 3k and keep the car inside.
I own two 124 E500's. Surprisingly the W124's have less road noise but the 550 will run circles around the M119.

2014 E550 4MATIC TUNED - Turbo Upgraded Stage 3
Mine had Cam Shaft position code popped once, I cleared the code and scanned with Xentry. It never showed up after clear codes.
But i am still wondering why would it show up.
