2016 E400 Loaner
I think the E43 will impress more people than you think and if it's priced right you'll see all these new AMG ballers on the road very soon in their c43 and e43's

I agree that the E43 will be a strong seller but call me nostalgic but there is no replacement for displacement. I am certain the E43 will be a rocket but I am not sure how smooth it will be compared to the V8.

Was your E400 "loaner" brand new off the lot, dealer sales demo or a true loaner?
If it was / is a true service loaner, did your stealer happen to loan out E350s before? Mine only offers the anemic C300 as loaners. I don't see them investing in anything else.
The dealer in Paramus NJ is huge and I would assume the would have one of the largest sets of inventory to work with whether for sales, loaners, or demos but I never asked or have researched how it all works.

I wonder if someone with clout can pull off asking for an S550? Especially if the SA believes that your are in the market to get one fairly soon.
Another time, they had a 2009 E63 that they also told me 'no' for, and then gave me a C250 instead. I should look for a dealer that gives out at least the E400 (or any E or better, really)... although it doesn't really matter all that much to me.
One MB dealer sent me down the street to Enterprise for a busted Altima. Now THAT was annoying. Because I had planned that service a week in advance, and they told me they'd have a MB for me. And the Altima was the 4cyl CVT version... terrible, terrible car.
Atleast you tried it can't hurt to ask but the Altima is tough. A Maxima would've been legit though. If it's only for a day or two I really don't care what I have to take either but if it's for weeks I'd demand something relative to what I put in the shop so at least an E350

The dealership has a certain number of loaners. Not sure how it works, but dealership gets all my business, so I guess that helps.

present the attahed bulletin to your SA to pass along to shop foreman.
