Since it was a $1,000 refundable deposit, I went ahead and made that interest-free loan out to Elon Musk over the weekend...

2014 E550-sold 😩
Will it be a $50,000 car in 4 years, when you get your car?

Good question!
1. So far it is being advertised that the prices of $35K is "before" the additional 7500 tax incentive. Well... that can be true or false. It is true 7500 is being offered, but Telsa is quickly hitting the limitation of only the first 250,000 production car get's the tax break. Given the Model S and X should probably hit that figure before the 3 is rolled out, we are counting on the Feds to extend and expand the program. So that could be a factor.
2. Realistically the car probably won't be out until 2020, then given I am number 200K plus, most likely it's 2011/12. I wonder if any other competitors may have something cooking too for the next 5 to 6 years. That could influence my decision. it is still a long time before we see the car. Model X kept on getting delayed and delayed.
3. Elon promised a lot of features as standard. I guess when it comes down to it, it's a motor and batteries. so perhaps they CAN make it around 35K (even someone said a fully loaded would be between 40k to 45K) - boy that's 20K less than my car.... with 20K less, do I also lose 20K worth of goodies? meaning if the inteior of the car would be made of cheap material?
That being said. since it will be my daily commuter, i most likely would think it just gets me from point A to point B...

The based price for the fully loaded version is more like $60K. I bet by the time it is in production, it will cost even more. Electric cars are a lot of fun and very efficient but the cost of installing a high capacity charger at my house is an added investment I do not want to take on right now.

I thought about getting the Model-3 years ago, until I drove the Model S for a week,
there's just no way I can live with the cheap interior.
the Model S' interior is already far inferior compare to the W212 E-class, let alone the upcoming W213.
I can't imagine how bad the Model-3 will be.
No way that many people will buy the car with no option,
bigger battery ? dual motor ? tech package ? leather seat ?
by the time you cut the check it will be a $50K+ car,
oh, and if you trying to get the low end model your order will be push back so no tax refund for you.
and don't get me start on the touch screen thing, big screen is great, but I want physical button and knob for volume, HVAC..etc
I love Tesla as a company, but no thank you.

No chance. Model 3 is ugly as sin and the interior is a crime. Truly a computer on wheels. The Model X is also a big misfire for Tesla with those stupid doors that nobody wants that have delayed production.
The only smart Tesla purchase right now is a Model S. And even those look like Hyundais from a distance.
Tesla is not a true car company - they have demonstrated time and again that they are first and foremost a technology company that makes cars. If you can't deliver your product on time, you shouldn't be in that business.
If I was on the board I would encourage them to license their technology to real carmakers for a hefty fee. I would love to see what real carmakers with design aesthetic would be able to pull off with Tesla's technology.

I was interested in the model S but was planning on waiting a long time before doing anything about it. Feel the same way about the model 3. Maybe when I am ready to move on from my E I will give them a look, but that will be at least 3 years from now.

I thought the model 3 was a brand new model? I spent some time in an S, and loved it. Looking forward to seeing the 3 out on the road!

I was going to put a deposit down, but once I saw the front end and the dash... no way. it's ugly as sin! Especially the ipad dash.

i actually like the model 3 - except for that dashboard. there is no way it ships looking like that, i'm sorry but they're tripping.
even in the center console from the pictures i've seen online you can tell that the gaps are uneven and the materials are chintsy.
would never in a million years buy one looking the way it does inside currently.

and in order to break even at $35K there'll be some serious cost cutting.
I spent 500 miles on a Model S back in 2014 and the interior basically stay in it's concept stage.
lack of door pocket, center console storage, sun glasses holder bothers me,
for a car that seats 7 and only has two cup holders is also a joke, and it will gets in the way of your hand,
and no ventilated seat for a $85K+ car is just unbelievable.
They should look at Honda and learn how to utilize interior space.

^^^ I can tell youre not a fan :-) i was blown away by how quick it was, and did not count the cup holders....kidding...I did a lot less than 500 miles when I drove one....but man it was quick!!!...If the 3 can stay in the mid 40's Id strongly consider it if I were cross shopping against the C300 and the BMW 3....we see very few out east, but when I'm in the Bay Area they are everywhere...cheers

The feds won't extend the incentives. They didn't do it for the other manufacturers.
For some reason the front end of the 3 reminds me of Klaatu from the original "the day the earth stood still"
Fit and finish of the S is horrible. The car drives nicely but it isn't very comfortable. The dashboard of the 3 is a disaster.
This whole deposit thing seems like a Ponzi scheme and I'm not sure that we'll ever see the 3 - certainly not in 2017 and most "customers" will bail once the incentives go away.

MB was taking $1000 refundable deposits on the CLA250 many months before delivery. Many customers, incl my buddy, bailed once they realized it was a POS. Like Tesla it was a fully refundable deposit....
